A few days ago I popped the hood on my '97 to check engine oil, and right on top of the V8 was an annoyed vole. He scampered away, but that might explain a few half eaten acorns I'd found near the throttle body.
It might also explain the smell of coolant I've been noticing lately.
While in there I noticed the condition of the tube in the second picture below. The foil shielding has been really compromised, and I was hoping someone could quickly confirm my suspicion that this is part of the coolant system, maybe leading to the heater core? I'm going to blame the little guy for chewing on the pipe, whether he's guilty or not.
It was hard to take a picture around the intake, but this is the area under the intake tube's elbow. I see two shiny pipes under there, one closer to the firewall that looks like part of the AC system, and this one that's right next to the engine.
In the first picture the tube in question can be seen just under the elbow.
Can anyone say off the top of their head what shiny flexible tube runs right next to the engine there?

do not know what it is but can tell you that under the foil is a plastic tube connecting to the base of the throttle body. the other end picks up an electrical connection in the compartment housing the ECU. any good automotive parts store can sell you a replacement for that insulation foil, just bring a sample and they can at least order it. it appears to protect the plastic tube from the heat of the exhaust system.
Jaguar DELETED the EGR on the 1997 MY XK8 (NAS cars) from VIN 011462-ON and issued a TSB for the new ECM part number.
XK8s from VIN 001036-011461 were fitted with EGR.
It is probably legal to remove the pipe/EGR valve if you can find a later ECM. Disabling the system will likely result in a DTC if the ECM is not replaced with one that is not looking for the EGR system.
Flash Programming is also a possibility if you have the capability.(see TSB 303-36)

Thanks for all of the suggestions. I'll have to take better pictures when the rain stops. @WhiteHat may have been on to something since it looked like the pipe goes from the throttle body to the compartment where I think the ECU lives. I thought the heater core was around there too, but maybe not.
I believe I saw a green connector sticking out from under the foil, so I'm going to try to snap a picture of that, if I saw right the first time.
