Default Removed block drain plug and drained transmission pan

Removed block drain plug so going to flush with hose water. Once closed up and radiator hooked up will flush with distilled water. When drained transmission pan only about a pint came out. Coolant is denser than transmission fluid and no coolant came out first. What came out looks coolant free. Letting jar sit overnight and will see if any coolant separates out. Planning before hook up trans lines to cooler I'll run with two lines connected by a clear plastic tube and see if looks good. If I'm thinking about this right, the transmission pumps fluid to the radiator but doesn't suck it back in. Because reservoir cap was off no pressure to force coolant back into transmission.

Convertible so has X support. Disconnecting aft bolts gave just enough room to rotate breaker bar to loosen.

Used this to break loose. Really hard to fit in ratchet and extenders in tight space. Luckily had this wheel leg breaker bar.

Once cracked drain plug used this setup to remove.

All that came out of draining transmission pan.

Doesn't look like any coolant in transmission fluid.

There was probably more pressure in the trans fluid than the coolant, so likely that the flow was all one-way. Which is better for you, as flushing the coolant system is a lot easier.

Put a baby pool under car. This is what came out after flushing with a garden hose with block plug out.

Keep in mind that the ATF will have likely weakened the coolant hoses internally even though you flushed it all out.

It’s unfortunate that this happened to you but, you made a good move to get a good used one vs another Nissens radiator. Excluding that radiator, Nissens make really good products. I’m with Xalty as they’re definitely less efficient.

Hmm, I doubt that is the case. A small amount of oil in there for a couple of days is unlikely to do any damage.

The OEM transmission cooler is long box with fins. The Nissen replacement is just a tube.

When I discovered for myself the less than optimal cooling ability of the Nissen radiator it occurred to me that installing a stand alone transmission cooler and eliminating the radiator having to function as transmission cooler might bump the coolant temp down a few degrees due to not having the hot ATF circulating thru the radiator .

the jury is out on that, but it might’ve actually reduced the coolant temp 5-10 degrees. Time will tell.

Even though when drained pan only transmission fluid came out and no coolant I decided to drop the pan because coolant is heavier than transmission fluid and draining doesn't fully empty pan. Good news, no coolant in pan.
