Smile radio antenna making noise

I have started hearing what sounds like a bad noise when I turn off my radio and the antenna retracts. Is there any recommendation for an action to avoid a future failure?

Thanks guys

My antenna sort of "grumbles" on the way down. If you watch it retract you can see where it starts getting jittery. I just keep it clean with mineral spirits (never a lubricant!). Sometimes it works well for a period. The grumbling comes and goes too. I believe that, at least for a while, it's because of the antenna getting pretty gunked-up with winter driving in snow, salt and slush. I expect it to get better as it clears that stuff out (if that's possible).

Thanks. You are probably right. Except this car is never even driven in the rain. Snow and ice???? What's that stuff. Sorry. I just couldn't help myself. I really feel for you guys living through that kind of weather. Especially this LAST winter. It may be hot here in the summer but at least we are spared that severe winter snow and ice. But this year we have had a terrible lot of rain and thunder storms. We are nine inches of rain ahead of normal. The XJ6 has been getting a work out.

But I will clean the antenna as you recommend.

Thanks

Use a good quality electric switch cleaner like Servisol - just a couple of squirts and let it trickle down the length of the extended mast then wipe off excess (upwards) - WD40 not so good as attracts dirt and gunk
