Default Antenna Mast Clean

Got this message on my radio this afternoon when starting up. Any idea on what type of oil and where do I add? It has been making a noise when going up and down. So I guess its time.

No oil to add - it's a reminder to clean the antenna mast (see section boxed in red):

You can toggle the message ON or OFF in setup mode:

Doesn't everyone use them?

This is a pack of 12 Jaguar approved cleaning wipes (Auto-Antennen-Pflegetüchlein) for the cleaning and maintenance of electric aerials and power antennas.

The tissues are manufactured by Hirschmann of Germany and are a quick and easy way of ensuring your aerial antenna mast is correctly cleaned and lubricated. Ideal for routine cleaning of your car's aerial to ensure it operates quietly and smoothly.

The tissues are impregnated with the correctly formulated cleaners and lubricants. (WD40 and 3 in One are not ideal or recommended for aerial mast cleaning). They have two tear off ends so the tissue forms a sleeve which can then be run along the extended mast ensuring mess free use.

As supplied to BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes and Rolls Royce for approved servicing.

Available as part of the comprehensive range of approved cleaning products from your Jaguar dealer.

After you use those special tissues to lube your antenna, you're supposed to change the air in your tires....

Laugh all you want, guys, I have been using those Hirschmann packs for nearly three years now and they work much better than WD-40 or 3-in-1 etc. I have supplemented them occasionally with silicone spray and there has been a noticeable reduction in the amount of road dirt picked up on the antenna plus they are extremely convenient in use. A couple in the glove box, a quick antenna wipe while the High Commander is in the market! Don't knock it until you've tried it!

I'm surrounded by cynics. Worse than that, cynics with dirty radio aerials.

You'll all be telling me next you don't take the wheels off to clean the insides of the rims.

Joking aside, think of all the posts we get about replacing sticking antenna masts. Unless physically damaged, they usually stick because they aren't kept clean. This puts a strain on the plastic toothed drive and something has to give.

True, but they're easy to keep clean and lubed with a variety of products we all have around the house and garage. I use a dab of my trusty lithium-based white grease. Dab it on, run the antenna up and down a couple of times, and wipe off the excess. Cheap, easy, fast, and effective....

No special hoity-toity designer product needed....
