Default Rear quarterlight window

Hi all.
New to here having bought a 2001 XK8 in Canada.
All fine for the first year, but following winterizing the car I'm having a problem with the rear offside quarterlight window.
Took the hood down for the first time this season & heardca bit of a crunching noise behind my head at the beginning of the hood lowering process. Figuring this might just be due to the first lowering of the season I proceeded to lower the hood all the way, but upon completion I noticed that the drivers side rear window wasn't fully retracted. Tried putting the hood back up, but heard the same crunching noise & noted the same rear window hadn't full rolled up either.
Tried the hood down & up again, but the window didn't move & the same crunching was heard each time.
Can't even manually pull the window closed until I get to the ******* & am worried to leave the car in the open since it effectively has a hole in one side which makes the car easy to break into.
Has the window come off it's runners? Maybe there's a drive belt that's come off? Any advice?
Hopefully not too expensive :-(
Thanks
Joffa

This is a problem that I haven't heard about at all in our cars. BTW, when you say hood, you mean top, right? Anyway the top going down does make some odd noises, I doubt crunching is related to the 1/4 window problem, as it doesn't intersect except when in the fully closed position. Maybe someone can give you at least some idea as to what happened in your case.

I'd take her to the dealer if it were me, as this part isn't even easy to access. Alot of times, specialized systems need the dealer's attention, and alot of people think everything is a DIY job. Alot is...don't get me wrong. Maybe i'm just less adventerous.

And, since your just signing up, take a small tip from a lifer... try to be a little more considerate about creatively describing the dealer, as we have some good people on this site that is employed by such dealers, and if you want their help (and you will) you refrain from any remarks that are insulting to their place of employment and livelihood. I like to refer to them as high-priced repair shops that sell new cars, gives out sodas and water to their customers, and sells golf shirts/hats and jackets at the parts counters. Have you seen how clean they keep their work areas and floors?

Thanks for the response h20boy. I'll leave this one in the hands of the capable jaguar mechanics! By hood, I do indeed mean the top - comes from my British roots. The sound is definately from the rear window though which does PLO tough to access.
Read your last para with interest & reread my post to understand what you were referring to. I guess it was the mispelling of dealer :-) I add the emily because I'm accessing the site via an iPhone & for those of you who know them, you'll realize that whereas the predictive text that it uses to correct your touch screen errors can be good sometimes (auto insertion of words that it thinks you're trying to type), it can also get it very wrong sometimes!
A justified comment j20boy, but an honest typo! Must proof read better in the future!
Still be interested if anyone else has had issues with the rear windows on an xk8 before?
Thanks
Joffa

Welcome joffa, glad to hear the phone made the mistake and not you. Keep us updated on your window problem as well. Ask questions, so in case it happens again to another member, you'll have documented what the original problem, and repair is.

Enjoy the forums and feel free to jump in and contribute to all this fine content (I say fine loosely, as much of it is just banter and general chit chat, with the occasional tech topic to spicen things up.

Oh, and you must post a pic of your car with a welcome introduction in the New Member area. It's tradition...and youdon't want to break a tradition do you?

You say your car is a 2001? 1999-2000 has a TSB 501-94 on the regulator.

Thanks gus, good info for joffa. Mention the technical service bulletin (TSB) number to the dealer when you go, in case they aren't familiar with it. It does happen.

Finally got to the dealer today & they looked up the TSB. My VIN was after the range of that, but they still think it's the window regulator. $485 for the part :-( then 3.7 hours labour :-((
Booked in on Friday so will let you know if this was the final resolution.

What a dam shame! One heck of a price for the regulator! I had replaced front and back regulator in my sons 2000 S-Type and was able to purchase a regulator from the Ford dealership. It only took 30 to 40 min. It appears that a Lincoln LS has the same regulator. I wonder if this regulator is specific to the xk8?

Concluded this repair via the dealer yesterday. In total it cost $783.99 + tax for the fix - $402 + tax for the new regulator & 3.5 hours work.
Ah well - at least I'm not driving through the rain with half a garbage bag strapped to the side of the car now!

Default rear quarter window

I had the same problem with my 2005 XK8, 30K miles last week. Dealer replaced the regulator under warrenty, I have no idea what the cost was. I know we hear about bad dealers all the time. I am fortunate to have a good dealership. Have been dealing with them for 25 years now. Nice when you are able to find a good service department.

I had the same problem. In my case it was caused by a thieving ******* trying to get into the car. Cost $1300 to repair.
