Default Rear Suspension Rattle still after Lower Shock Bushings

I'm still getting a rattle out of the rear suspension over small bumps even after replacing both lower shock and sway bar bushings. It seems to go away at highway speeds but is very noticeable while driving on the streets and parking lots. It sounds very loose like a rattle that lasts longer than the bump itself. Seems to come from both sides. I'm going to put my son in the trunk to help pin point the location.
Any more ideas?

Thanks!

It could be the the upper shock mounts, sway bar bushings, sway bar end links. Possily the panhard bar bushings.

The sway bar and end links are easy to check and change if needed. The upper mounts, less so, but there are a few write ups on the forum how to do it.

One of my CATS Shocks had a Internal Rattle and the Dealer changed both Rear CATS Shocks under the New Car Warranty at the time.

I backed the Car up onto a pair of oil Change Ramps and got under the Car while a friend shook the rear up and down.

I could "Feel" the Noise at the top of the Left Rear Shock.

I have already replace the rear sway bar bushings and the end links look good. Tell me about the upper shock mounts?

This picture was taken from onther thread. What's up here that could rattle?

That's OK, he wants me to get in his trunk too to check out a click in his Infinity Q35. Tit for tat.

I have the same issue here, I have replaced the rear springs and spring seats, top and bottom shock bushes, sway bar bushes etc. Checked the shocks for rattles whilst they were off, no sign of a problem there.

I have checked the park brake cables and links, fitted rubber isolators on those too, checked brake disk dust plates, brake pads, exhaust mounts, bumper mounts, heat shields, bumped and shaken the exhaust system - everything.

I can't recreate the rattle by shaking, rocking or bouncing the car but as soon as I get on a rough road, rattle, rattle, rattle. it sounds like a bolt rattling around in a tin can. I have even checked the front end in case I am mis-hearing the location.

What I do know now is that mechanically everything is in great shape, best fix i can come up with is turn the stereo volume up a bit and keep the windows closed.

OK, but I'm still putting my son in the trunk.
It would be nice if there was a dyno somewhere that they would strap a piece of rebar to it's rollers so I could make it rattle while sitting still. I don't need to go over 10 mph.

Just for fun, have you checked out your trunk? Since it's a rattle sound, maybe something is loose in there. Possibly a nut or bolt dropped down in one of the crannies or in the tire well?

Won't hurt to look and your son is going to be in there anyway.

It could be your exhaust system.

Anyone have a feeling about cutting a hole in the rear window shelf on a couple to get at the top rear shock bolt to remove the shock w/o the spring? Looks interesting in this picture. I know I read about replacing the fuel pump in this manner.

I took my shocks and springs out a couple of weeks ago, it took about an hour each side from jacking up the car to having the bits on my bench. I reckon I could do it again in half that time now I know how to do it. No spring compressor required, so no danger when removing the spring as its not under any tension - almost falls out. Trick is to remove the 4 a-frame bolts which allows the suspension to drop a couple of inches lower allowing the spring and shock to come out freely.

Is there a place to go in this forum to bring up HOW TO pictures and possibly a movie or two to show and tell how to do perform different mechanical procedures?

Look in the stickies at the top of the forum. Lots of info there.

Download the JTIS software for a treasure chest of how-to procedures, with drawings, straight from Jaguar.

Also in the stickies is a Youtube library of videos made by Reverend Sam, a former member of this forum. You can also find his channel on Youtube by searching for sam1174.

I have the same rattle in my drivers rear. It keeps thumping after bumps. Ive also changed everything, its coming from the upper shock mount, somewhere...

I had 4 new regular shocks and front upper mounts installed by a shop, $400 for the shocks, $230 for the mounts and $780 for labor.

Fixed it! Much nicer to drive now.

My rattle turned out to be brake pads, they has been installed with no springs attached to the inboard pad. Some one had snapped them off on purpose by the look of them. New pads with springs intact and no more rattle.

As far as I am aware they share the same rear suspension setup. You should be OK.

That was annoying.
I have checked my pads and swapped shocks from left to right.
Next job is to fit new shocks.
