Default Reliability.

I just bought a 2005 Jaguar XKR MY FIRST JAG. My question is about the reliability of this car , with 57,000 miles, for a 2000 mile trip or should I be prepared for some trouble.

Hi Tom,
Get to know your car first, then go round every inch of it and make sure it is top line.

Do your normal checks before setting off and you should be perfectly ok.

I have a 2004 XK8 convertible that has about 45,000 miles on the clock.
I can honestly say that I have not had 'any' problems with it over the 7 years that I have had it.
I will however be installing the hydraulic pressure releif kit on the retractible pump , and replacing the transmission fluid;both as a precautionary measure.
Looking forward to many more years of trouble free driving.

PS. I store the Cat in my heated aircraft hanger over the northern winter months.

Spend some time reading the FAQ sticky threads at the top of this forum. There are several areas you'll want to get very familiar with and check on a regular basis, starting with the plastic cooling system components such as the reservoir tank....

Lots of maintenance and fix the known issues w/ aftermarket or upgrade = reliable
Just drive and fix broken stuff as it comes up = not very reliable

Do it yourself = not expensive
Take it to mechanic = ouch!

Have a good trip. No worse than any other car of that age and mileage. Most of the problems you'd run into are the nuisance type unless you run out of oil or blow a hose or something. Good check-up before you go and enjoy. Worse that can happen? Tow truck, motel for a day or two, ? rental car. Relax, enjoy!

As a former owner of a XJ8L and SType-R the Jaguars have been great with the XJ being the best of the two but both were great cars. as mentioned above check the basic maintenance items and enjoy.

Should be a reliable car. I have a 2000 XKR coupe that I bought 4 yrs ago with 54000 miles that I use as my daily driver. Right now the car is in for a headgasket repair with 117000 miles, besides that, only problems I had were fuel pumps, and water pump. The one issue I did have with the car was people tend to not see or hear the car, it's very quiet, and people cut you off. Driving the car with the parking lights on fixed this problem.

dHaven't had our XK8 w 42k miles long enough to say (bought used w 38k miles), but I can speak to our '04 XK8 4.2L which we bought new and now has 110k miles:

1. 14,500 miles: Warranty repair on oil supply problem to variable valve timing apparatus, no charge to us.

2. 77,500 miles: New heater control assembly in dash ~ air volume n temp not even from R to L side, $2,600 ... ouch. Had to replace the whole dang thing behind the dash.

3. 100,000 miles: New speaker driver side on dash, $100.

That's it. Everything thing else is routine maintenance and disposable items.

So I'd say they're pretty reliable.

I did almost a thousand this summer in my 01 with 39K. Had some coolant, oil, duct tape, a spare coil, jumper cables, a spare serpentine belt, and a socket set with me...just to limp somewhere if needed. Would have done the same in the new Lexus or any of the other cars. Had no trouble though!

You should be fine. By 2005MY almost all the issues had been corrected and reliability is great.
