replace coolant hoses

replace coolant hoses
So I just did the timing chains. Everything is fine. Go to work. At noon I was going to go to another building and there was a big puddle under the car. The upper coolant hose came off the thermostat fitting while the car was sitting.
Dealer says that is common and should not reuse coolant hoses once you have pulled them off.
Put on new coolant hoses and thermostat outlet cover.

My post was just to inform people that if you pull off a radiator hose breaking the static seal that has developed over the years, it will likely have expanded with age and will not stay on after you reinstall it.
If you do the timing chains, you remove the hoses and should replace them.

Coolant hoses should really be considered a time limited component - when I was involved in fleet maintenance we would change anything older than 5 yrs - a faulty pressure cap can also cause hoses to collapse or blow off . Much cheaper to replace the hoses as a preventative measure rather than deal with the aftermath of coolant loss.
Just my 2cents worth.

Well I've had most of my hoses off, several times and so far no leaks on a 2001 XKR. On the smaller hoses I use the blue gaskets sealant to get a good seal. The larger ones tend no to leak as long as you take care when removing them (i.e dont yank at them or stick flat end screw drivers in the end and stretch the hell out of them). WD40 on the hoses helps to get them off and keeps them supple (thank god for fish oil!!)
If you are taking the super charger off I do recommend replacing the one under there only because its a pain to do when it does go.
And for those who drive with the temp gauge off the scale and the red light glowing what do you expect?
