Default Replaced my battery, but the one that Auto Zone

sold me for my car does not have anywhere to attach the vent.

Duralast Gold/Battery (H8-DLG) | 2001 Jaguar XK8 8 Cylinders 4.0L SFI DOHC | AutoZone.com

Yes, I see this in the notes, but, there is no place to attach the vent when you actually have the battery.

Notes: ** 850 (EN) Cold cranking Amps (950 cranking Amps) **. 100 Reserve minutes. -> 3 year free replacement <-. Installation may take up to 30 minutes. Battery located in trunk. Battery is vented to outside of vehicle.

Is this a sort of battery that does not need it or what?

Some batteries come with parts to convert it to a vented battery. Even a gel/mat type battery, which that one doesn't appear to be, needs a vent in an enclosed application.

Ask for the conversion kit or a statement in writing that it is not required. Bet you don't get one.

Kevin,

All "wet cell" type batteries must have some type of vent to allow the flammable gasses (Hydrogen) produced by the battery to escape. In this case the Autozone battery description states that this battery has vented caps. Since the Jaguar battery is mounted in the trunk, it absolutely requires that a sealed battery using a connection for an external vent tube must be used. Otherwise very dangerous explosive gasses could build up in the trunk. A single spark could completely ruin your day...and car.

I would ask the Autozone people to further research a battery for you, having the proper attachment for the vent tube! If they can't...shop for one elswhere.

Jon

Well, actually I already have the habit of leaving that cover off of the top of the battery and keeping a charger inside the trunk to keep it at full charge, since I can often go a couple of weeks without driving it.

They had two batteries for my car. I may go and take a look at the other one, which was more expensive but had a 3 year warranty, while this one had an 8 year and a 3 year free replacement and maybe the other one has the vent.

Looks like vent holes are showing on the Autozone site pictures.

If it is there you should also have a bung/plug to block the opposite end unused hole. This is normally in the form of a break off piece from the removed terminal protector.

The battery I bought did not have yhe adapter to fit the black hose in my car, but I just had to cut a short piece of 1/4 polyethelene tubing to fit in the battery vent.

Replacement OEM Varta batteries are supplied by Jaguar with both side vents plugged. The 90 degree vent adaptor comes in a separate packet to avoid damage in transit. The LH plug has to be removed and the adaptor pushed into place.

If any equivalent replacement battery from another source has the same plugged vent holes, it should be possible to pull the adaptor out of the old battery and fit it to the replacement.

My last replacement battery (Interstate) required a drill bit to open the vent hole to receive the adapter.
Check the vent to ensure that it is open to the battery interior.

I think they may have sold you the wrong battery. Ours should be "Group 49" which specifies venting. Got mine from Autozone 5+ years ago, and it did come with the vent kit included.

Maybe they don't carry that one anymore. Don't know.

You DO need a vent on there.

Thanks, I went back at this morning. The problem was that I had secured the battery in place before I looked for the vent holes and the holes were right underneath the bracket that holds the battery down so that it was impossible to see them until I took it off. Thanks.

Default Autozone h8-dlg must be vented

I know this thread is a bit old, but I just went through this issue last week. Here's what I learned.

Yes, you DO need to vent the AutoZone H8-DLG battery in the XK8/XKR. There is a vent hole on either end of the battery for this purpose.

One vent hole you may plug, and the other vent hole should be connected to a vent tube that is then run through the existing rubber floor grommet to vent outside the vehicle.

The mfr instructions on the battery say to vent one vent hole and plug the other one using the plug they give you. It's molded into the (+) post cover.

Both vent holes connect to the same battery chamber so it's not necessary to vent both. [NOTE: You can prove this to yourself by blowing air into either vent hole and feeling the air come out the other vent hole.]

These batteries do not come with vent connectors. I went back to the store and asked why I didn't get one with my battery. The store employee I asked has been there for years. He said they have not been getting those connectors in with the Duralast batteries for a long time.

I think this is unsat, and that AutoZone should provide a free connector with these batteries. I would expect at least one right angle connector, and possibly other kinds, depending on which vehicle it is going into.

At the very minimum they should sell you the tube and connector you need, but they didn't even stock the right connector at my store. I had to improvise using a vacuum line connector.

The illustration on the AutoZone website shows the battery has a vent hole at both sides to allow for left or right venting:

This could be fitted with a removable plug or, as has been mentioned earlier in the thread, you may need to drill out the appropriate hole.

You will also need a push fit adaptor to connect to the vehicle black plastic vent hose. This is the one on the OE Jaguar Varta battery on my 2001 XK8:

Your old battery should have one that could be re-used.
