Default Replacement motor for 2001 XK8

I need to replace the motor on my 2001 XK8. I was told that any 4.0 engine from 1999 to 2003 would work. When I check on Car-Part.com for the engine it shows two engines. One through engine number 108122359 and the other from 108130000. Is there a difference in these engines?
Also since I am looking for a motor are the later motors better than the early ones? Is a 2003 motor better than a 1999? Thanks.

There are differences in the two engines but nothing that affects an engine swap. The engine serial number defines the manufacture date of the ENGINE (YYMMDDHHMM). On August 13, 2001 Jaguar converted from plastic tensioners to metal and about February 2002 the single cam chain was upgraded to more substantial cam chains. The metal tensioners are a must, the upgraded chains are preferred.

Other than that the miles and maintenance trumps any other minor differences.

My engine was replaced with a 2002 model motor. Before the shop dropped it in they popped it open and the tensioners had already been changed. If you have the RIGHT mechanic for the job it will work fine. Stay away from the older motors. Not too sure what year they quit using the nikisail liner but I would get a newer motor. My motor has 60k miles and sure runs like it.

put an GM LS series engine in it. more horsepower, better mileage and affordable parts. Mine will get this conversion once the Jag engine dies.

Yes it will fit, and the GM transmission. But the ECU etc. etc. will have to be replaced and cubic money will be involved.
