severe squeak behind dash

Bought 97 XK8 and it developed a severe squeak behind the dash. It moved from one side to the other and would get louder and softer. Longest 18 hour drive in history. Stopped completely if hit large bump but would return with a vengence....any ideas?
Likely cause is the demister vents popping up a little and rubbing on windshield.
Next time you drive and the squeek happens, push the vents down and see if it stops or changes.
2 ways to properly fix it. Pull the dash out and epoxy down the vents, or our favorite, pull the windshield......and epoxy down the vents.

You shouldnt be able to pull the vents off that are at the windshield. Best way is to go to a glass shop and get the windshield removed. Then epoxy down the vents and leave something heavy on them overnight to help cure. Then have glass shop reinstall the windshield. Much better than removing the dash.
Here is a link that might help also........Good Luck

The vents popped right out because previous owner must have forced them out. The squeek ended up being the shock tower as my husband first suspected. A little WD40 and that horrible noise was gone. 18 hours of torture... live and learn. Thanks for all your help and sticking with me thru the process...Lori
