Default Shift Knob Replacement?

This seems like it should be simple - but - I bought an aftermarket shift knob (one that matches the wood on the dash). It looks like there should be a simple replacement process - loosen the lock nut at the base of the original knob, and unscrew, but mine won't budge!

Is there a secret to releasing the existing knob - or am I just too weak (or timid) to do it? DaleD

My was really tight too. I just got a real good grip and she let go. I won't recommend using a tool as I wouldn't want to damage your original knob.

Thanks for the encouragement, Growler. I may just put a pipe wrench on it - I already have the replacement, and really don't care about this one. I just wanted to know I wouldn't mess up something that would prohibit screwing on the new one! DaleD

If you do wrap some rubber around the wrench where it will contact with the wood. I have these rubber type pads that I use for such occasions. put them over the teeth and hold them in place with a little blue painters tape.

Dale - Where did you find a knob that matched the dash wood? I find this to be one of the most irritating oversights on both my XK8 and my wife's XJ8L. The factory knobs look like they were aftermarket add ons that did not match. Pity.

When we sold our 1993 VDP, my wife made me replace the shift knob so she could keep it. It's pretty cool, with the growler engraved on it. Maybe I could figure out a way to fit it to the XJ8.

Thanks.

I got mine from British Auto Wood. He sometimes put them on Ebay.

Keep an eye on eBay. I bid on several unsuccessfully, then found this one with a "Buy it Now" button - and I did. Dark burl with growler inset. Now to get it mounted! DaleD

Just to close the thread - I finally did just what I threatened - put a pipe wrench on it. With a double-thick wrap of terry cloth. It broke loose - no damage - and now I have a nice matching knob with an inset red growler smiling at me!

Thanks to all for the interest and encouragement! DaleD
