Should I Use J Gate ? 1997 XK8. 90k miles
Thanks WindyCity..I got a laugh out of your post!! I just figured it was some Jaguar thing!
Find the wolf you have inside the lamb! You just might see the mascot smile when you USE the car...

i use mine always to slow the car in traffic to not hit the brakes and create a traffic jam when everyone behind me hits their brakes. First I take my foot off the gas to slow, and if thats not enough, Ill flip it into a lower gear on the J gate and lastly hit the brakes when needed. You know if everyone went the same speed on the freeway. left some room between cars and took the foot off the gas for minor slowing rather than touching the brakes every 10 seconds, there wouldnt be traffic jams

Alaskamike,
It is a manual -- just minus the clutch! ;-)
Actually, I use the j-gate often; that's why it's there. I frequently downshift to second or third for corners and curves. My car has the speed limiter switch, which I originally thought was an absolutely purposeless thing to have. Then I realized it's good for learning what is the fastest safe speed on curves I repeatedly encounter on my local trips. You just set it for a comfortable speed and you don't have to watch the speedo and can concentrate on driving. Next time, set it a few mph faster. Keep doing it until you discover the ideal speed. Don't know what else it could be good for, though.

use it all the time; resolved my https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...s-no-gs-94830/ issue, sounds great on downshift, and all of the advantages mentioned earlier.
I would say it's my favourite stick to play with in the car.

Being left handed I try to stay on the left side of the gate. On back roads it's the only way to fly. If you don't want to shift get a Murano with a CVT. Have one and it is the strangest thing to drive at first. Revs stay the same and you keep going faster.
Huh! Ok, trying this next time. I've always been scared to try it while in motion!
I see these things in any car that has them and harken back to the overdrive days when you would really just use them for climbing steep mountain roads. Figured, no use.
