Default Side View Mirror Camera Blind Spot Monitor

As I posted in another thread, I had my windows tinted today. The place at which I had the tinting performed is also a car audio place. While there, I heard another customer talking about installing a blind spot monitor where a small part of the left and right side view mirrors are monitors connected to small cameras that are positioned to show the blind spot. They are rigged up to automatically turn on when the directional is used. This sounds like a great idea to me and I was wondering if anyone here has ever heard of such a system? I've been Googling but cannot find anyone selling such as system but it's a great idea and someone must have thought of it.

There's always good old fashioned shoulder checking. Nothing beats having a direct peep at the situation.

I had a cerebral hemorrhage last fall. It has left me weak on my left side and I find it a little difficult (difficult, not impossible) to look back over my shoulder. So I've been trying to think of a solution. I haven't worked out all the details but I think this may work.

Sounds like a great idea in that case.

Mark,

Hope you're through that OK now.

Although you may be itching to spend the $$ on a camera, would this simple alternative be any use?

Blind Spot Mirror.pdf

It's a convex mirror designed to be stuck on the corner of the standard mirror to give an additional wider angle of view.

Thanks and yes, I'm doing much better and I have been looking at similar mirror solutions. I'm in the process of weighing the advantages/disadvantages of the simple vs. complex solution.

There are interior rear view mirrors available that have display screens inside them, behind one-way mirror type glass. The screen is only apparent when switched on. It could be fed a signal from one of two cameras by way of a handy A/B switch. Search 'rearview mirror camera' or similar to find dozens available. Add in an extra camera and your own switch and you're there.

Or... if you want to get really Knight Rider, you could pop for the same utilizing a heads-up display reflected onto the windshield.

I was driving an XF recently and this type of system comes as standard on the one I was driving. It helps a lot.

Mark, you may find this interesting: LaneFX® Blind Spot Mirror Technology - Automatically Moves Your Power Mirrors to Eliminate Your Blind Spot
It sweeps the mirror outward, briefly, when the turn signal is put on. This allows a quick check of the blind spot before returning back to the normal position.

Keith, yes that's very interesting. I'll have to consider the best way to go. The LaneFX system is all ready developed but the rear view mirror camera thing is a very cool idea.
