Default SLCM replacement/

2002 XKR 100 convertible.

This story begins with user error. I had a Gatorade spill in the trunk frying my SLCM. Everything worked fine except for the convertible top and rear windows. They were completely non functional. I did several things checking the top to find the fail. I ended up taking the SLCM out from beneath the fuse box in the trunk. When I got it opened up sure enough one of the chips was fried. I have seen some threads mentioning SLCM replacement. I tried SNG Barret and others but were told that the part needs programed by the dealership. The dealership has quoted me $550 for the part but said I would need to have the car there so that they can program it for me. $$$ I have found a thread explaining how to program the key fobs, is there something else that the dealership needs to do to program this for me?

Thanks for the help.

I'd assume this is something that can be done with SDD/IDS? If so, you can get a cable and the software and run it off a laptop you should be able to do it yourself.

I am not completely positive, but I believe a control module requires "programming" only when it is a version newer than the original module. If you happen to find a replacement module of the same or older version, no programming should be necessary. Reportedly, there is a sticker in the spare wheel well area that lists most control modules and their software version (VCATS) at the time of manufacture, along with your VIN. Might be a good place to start. With a bit of luck, you might find a module on Craigslist or eBay. Some members of this forum also part cars out and might offer this module for cheaper. Failed modules for our cars are usually either repaired or replaced with used ones. Typically, new modules from Jaguar are either not available or flat out not affordable.

Best of luck, keep us posted.

How did you determine a chip was fried? If you can read the part number perhaps you could just replace the chip. My experience with electronics is that spilling Gatorade/coke etc does not permantly damage things, rather it just shorts out traces making the thing inoperable. Sometimes you can fix it by washing the entire board in distilled water then letting it dry out throughly.

Mad as 'washing' electronic circuit boards may sound, I too have had some wins with various items using this method although tbh the success rate is higher if whatever it is wasn't powered up at the time of its baptism.

Rinse sparingly, and you can use a small paintbrush or soft toothbrush to gently rub off the gunge. Just make sure that it's absolutely dry before refitting. I'd certainly give it a try before resorting to a specialist rebuilder/replacement.

To some extent it depends on whether you can manage with your baby laid up in the meantime.

Installed new (Ebay) SLCM unit in my 2002 XJ8. It turned off the brake lights that were on with the original unit. But now it won't start! Put the old unit back in and it still won't start. Turns over fine, but no take off. Any thoughts?

The SLCM is a programmable unit: it needs to be introduced to your car, and it won't recognise the keys: hence no start.

Since putting the old one back doesn't help, the car may have decided that someone is tampering and immobilised itself. Appreciate that it can't now be driven, but you need someone with access to the appropriate Jaguar diagnostics (e.g. IDS, SDD or last resort, dealer) to resolve this.

You also need to check the VCATS label (not sure where it is located on the XJ) to confirm compatibility

I believe the XJ is the same as the XK, but suggest you post this in the XJ forum for a definitive response.

HTH,
Mike
