Default Is this an SLM problem?

Hi, I have a 2001 XK8. I bought it as a project and I’m down to the last jiggly problems before Mr MOT has a poke!!
So I have no rear tail lights, no number plate lights, no fuel pump and don’t seem to be able to get the fob to program? Would I be right in thinking the SLM needs some love?
Thankyou in advance.

No fuel pump? - please elaborate...

The guy likes to talk but the method he describes works...

For the lights, me (and I need my head examined), I'm terrible at finding the info for the doggone fuse panels but there are some resident experts here that will help

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I can power the fuel pump by using a jump wire across the relay terminals but it won’t fire using any of the relays?

I love that jaguar didn’t label fuses, makes me feel better about all the things I didn’t label!!

Does the car crank on key turn?

Hi Michael, Yes it turns over on the key, and with the relay eliminated runs very nicely. I just don’t seem to be getting relay activation from whichever computer is in charge.
Thank you for your attention:-)

The 2001 doesn't have the return less fuel system OR the module in the trunk to regulate fuel run/pressure. Just say'n...

Have you tried swapping the relay for another one, known good, relay?

There is a seller in Europe called "autoreserve", I know you don't want to wait, but they sell those common xk jag relays for a US dollar, there and abouts. You can swap in another relay for say, horn (I dunno), just to see if that will work.

I think for the MOT, your main concern right now is the lights.

Also, if you are getting a message saying "CHECK REAR LIGHTS" there is a very good chance that the lights ARE working but the car is giving a false message... As me how I know, lol

Hi Jay, Thanks for the reply, I’m a bit of a novice to the XK8 but have a good all round grasp of most cars. I take it that it’s just a straight relay supplied fuel pump? Through a computer or just off the key?

I agree that the rear lights are the only obstacle to trying an MOT, but I did check and they are definitely not working. I had to replace both number plate light bulbs which were black. I checked all the other lights and it’s only the tail lights and the number plate lights.

Thanks again🙂

The fuel pump relay is triggered by the ECM, tail & number plate lamp relay by the BPM.

A couple of fuses to check for starters. The fuses are numbered, but you need good eyesight or a magnifying glass to see them

Trunk/boot fusebox:

F19 (5A) for the RH tail lamps and number plate lamps
F21 (5A) for the LH tail lamps

Aas Jay suggests, are you getting a 'bulb fail rear/check rear lights' in the dash message centre?

Note that MY2001 on there are two separate tail lamp bulbs on each side. One is a 5W single filament, the other is a 5/21W, where the 21W section isn't used.

Fuel pump relay is F3 (5A) also in trunk fusebox. Check also that the Ignition Positive relay (same location) hasn't gone AWOL. It's here:

You can download the full 2001 Electrical guide from member Gus' on-line encyclopedia here:
http://www.jagrepair.com/images/Auto.../jagxk2001.pdf

If everything above checks out, you'll need to do some basic tracing with a multimeter.

edit: You can swop any of the brown relays around to check them.

Default SOLVED:-)))))

Thank you to everyone who helped me solve this problem. I was looking at the relay diagram on one of my replies and realised I needed more relays than I currently have!!! And by moving the relays I do have I can make different items come to life! (Shocker!)

I think it’s one of the pit falls of taking on a project with no manuals, no experience and that has already been messed with!

Thank you all.

Glad you got the simple fix
You can get a set of handbooks from the stickies at the top of the main page, although you need 10 posts to 'unlock' access.

Note most cars don't have the optional accessory connector, so you needn't worry about having a relay occupy that position.

Good luck with the inspection.
