Default Smaller Wheels?

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, but I did a search, and found a few threads for bigger wheels, but not smaller ones....

Recently bought a 2005 XK8 4.2, with the 20" split rim alloys. It's also got the 'R' brakes.

Can I fit smaller wheels? And what sort of options do I have?

I've never been a fan of great big alloys, but the price / condition said 'that one' over the others I'd looked at.

Sorry to post a query as a first post....

Welcome to the forum ReAndyMator,

I think you could be a 'first' wanting to go large to small! I'll leave it to the wheel experts to comment on your specific options for going smaller but the 20 inch rims have to be readily saleable as most owners want larger wheels.

My last 2005 XK8 Coupe had 20 inch Sepangs. After a 2001 on 18 inch Impellars, I always found the ride harsh especially over our potholed UK roads. My current XK is on 19 inch Carelia and is considerably more comfortable. I won't be going with 20 inch rims again.

I have a hunch that downsizing might become more popular as time goes by. From remarks here and elsewhere I sense that huge wheels (and the corresponding virtually-no-sidewall tires) are falling out of favor a bit. Wheels and tires way too easily damaged, poor ride quality, and short tread life from tires are all beginning to wear a bit thin on some people.

Cheers
DD

Sure hope you're correct, Doug. I truly appreciate the 16-inch wheels on my Dodge Ram pickup. Phenomenal ride for a truck and plenty of very reasonably-priced tire options when it's time for new rubber. The 17-inch wheels on my S-Type are okay. But I despise the 19-inch wheels on my wife's XK8....

To the OPs question: I have 18" hydra wheels on my 2003 R with Brembo brakes. Any of the OEM 18" wheels should fit but nothing smaller as they won't clear the caliper.

Too bad you aren't a bit closer, we could trade. I've been thinking about a set of those big dumb 20" wheels.

Not all 18" wheels will clear for instance the double 5s require a 1" spacer

Good to see that there's a few options...

Have to start looking shortly and see if anyone wants to trade.... (got to be the easiest way, eh...)

Thanks,

Andy
