Be very careful at the stoplight, you XK8 racing guys.

There is now a CAMRY that can smoke you from 0-60 and probably even in the quarter mile.

I think that we can still get a CAMRY in top end.

» Toyota Camry 0-60 1/4 mile fuel economy
2012

Camry

(3.5L V6)
  1. 0-60: 5.9 sec
  2. 1/4 mile: 14.4 sec
  • Engine: V6 – 3.5 L DOHC 24 valve
  • HP: 268 hp @ 6200 rpm
  • Torque: 248 lb-ft @ 4700 rpm
  • FWD
  • Transmission: 6-Speed AT
  • Fuel Economy: 21/30 mpg

I don't know, racing a Camry just doesn't seem cool

That is why I am giving the warning.

It would be WAY less cool to be spanked by one.

Well, the Camry is 750lbs lighter...

Camry 3240/268=12.0 lbs/hp

XK8 3950/290=13.6 lbs/hp

Now, compare apples to apples. Let's see what a 15 year old Camry was like...

2998/133=22.5 lbs/hp

I'd rather lose in my xk8 than win in a Camry

Well, as you may well note, I was referring to the current Camry's, not the ones from fifteen years ago.

I never thought that I would see a sub six second Camry. The Camry was always a middle aged family car, not a sub six second performance car. I think that it is rather amazing that there is now a sub six second Camry.

Fair warning to the red light racers.

OK, let it be known that I am not trying to tell anyone to go out and buy a Camry.

Just upgrade to a 14 year old XKR, and you'll have no worries! You'll get the same sexy body and the power to dust off any Camry, any time. Problem solved!

Actually, tberg, I am WAY past the adolescent red light racing. I will admit to some of it in my twenties, but now I am all grown up and realize that it is a childish game.

I hope I can NEVER say that!!! I refuse to prove them right! Jaguars are NOT an old man's car!!!

There must be a way of squeezing out at least 50 ponies out of an XK8 without upgrading to an XKR.

PS:
I know the XKR has 100 ponies over the 8.

Driving a Camry, even a fast Camry tells the world that you have given up on life but still have to get to your crummy job. I know this for certain since for the last 3 days I have been driving a Beige Camry rental car. oh the humanity.

I don't think the problem is so much a lack of power but an excess of weight. My 1995 Corvette had a "measly" 300hp but it was exceptionally light. So I could often beat quite a lot of cars off the line from a red light when the occasion called for it.

Yeah, but I don't think shedding weight from these cars is all that easy unless you're willing to sacrifice a few luxuries.

Life is too short for Camry's. (And a few other!) May I never get too old for a good race - even if I lose one once in a while!

At the end of the race, you are still the one in the Jag.

I am trying to find the post number where someone said that they would rather drive a Camry than an XK8. Can anyone provide the number to that post?
In my OP, I was remarking that I was surprised that Toyota had bothered to put such an engine in a Camry that would make it a sub six second to sixty car. I think that that is incongruous with the concept of driving a Camry, which has been a rather mundane but reliable family car.
