Sound amplification dimming after turning on car
Hi,
I have a 2001 xkr.
After moisture entering the boot over winter storage the following issue has arisen.
Turn on car, with sound at 35 ie full volume the sound will come on loudly then within a second dim to a very low volume although the volume is still at 35. Sometimes there is no sound at all.
Can anyone please advise?
Thanks.

Your amp might be dying. You have the premium sound option ? Many / Most XKR’s do have the Alpine system with the separate amp as part of the in the CD / Amp / Nav stack.
On my 2002 XKR my amp was slowly dying and I had the sound dimming like you describe (but I didn’t try the max setting as I was afraid of blowing something expensive). And had other symptoms too, like not working at all at times, until the amp finally died 100%.
But my story had a happy ending; I found several amps on eBay with the same part number as my amp (the number was on a paper sticker on the amp case, IIRC. You do have to remove the amp to see the part number on the sticker.
i had no way to test the amp and was leery of just throwing parts at the problem. But the cheapest of the ebay amps was like $36 , with a money back guarantee, so other than my time, not much / nothing to lose by trying it.
the replacement amp fixed the problem 100% and has been working every day for at least 5 years now.
it takes about 1.5 hrs. to replace the amp, and some of the stack nuts / bolts are a pain to reach, but doable if you don’t mind losing some knuckle skin.

Thanks. I suspect the amp too.
My part number IS LNF4170AA.
I have the optuon to buy one at £106 but they will not accept returns. They also advised it could be the head unit not sending thr correct signal to amp.
Don't know what to do as dont want to throw money at parts which i may not need.

You had moisture in the boot - its going to be the amp. If you really want to test it, you'll have to open up the AI-NET cable that connects the head unit to the amp. By open up, I mean slice it open to get to the wires - you can then wire in a different sound source (eg an MP3 player, mobile phone headphone jack etc) or connect it to a different amp (eg portable speakers).
If you don't feel confident doing that, just find an amp with a guarantee.

thanks.
I'll buy an amp and take the plunge.
Make sure you’re buying one with exactly the same part number, including any letters.
good luck, I think you are on the right track.
