Default Source for Alternator Cooling Duct

Hi all,

I've just burned up a replacement alternator in my 2002 XK-8 after only 8 months and I've read in this forum that there is supposed to be a cooling duct that is missing from my car. I have the U shaped duct that runs down from alternator to just below the suspension. What I need is the duct that runs forward of that with the "scoop." I think the part number is HJA4477AC or HJA4477AD. I've just gone through my usual part sources and it appears to be discontinued. Does anyone know of a source for these?

Also, does anyone know why Jaguar put an alternator on a car that has no cooling fan attached to the pulley? In a car with electric fans that only come on when the engine gets hot, meaning that there are lot of times when no cooling air is moving around in the engine bay, seems to be a major oversight. I guess you have to look after your service departments! Oh well!

Thanks for your help in advance.

P/N HJA4477AC (Alternator Cooling Duct) has been superseded by HJA4477AD.

Forum sponsor S N G Barratt are showing this as no Longer available but Gaudin Jaguar are listing it at $25.31

the cooling duct will only add to the problem as it clogs up and blocks the air flow. I junked mine and most others have also.

Graham, I called Gaudin and they list it on the website but they can not get it. Jaguar discontinued it so no go there.

LaRue - Interesting! Makes me wonder if I should continue to pursue this. I hate to burn up another alternator though. I guess it's only really going to get hot when the car is in traffic since at other times wind is moving through the engine compartment. And when you are standing, the air duct really isn't doing anything anyway!

My wife's 2006 XK8 did not have its alternator air duct in place when we purchased the car in February 2012. I researched the issue, wasn't happy at all about having to pony up $35 or so for what should be a $5 part, but bit the bullet and did so anyway. Once I bolted the air duct into place and observed the "engineering" behind it, I strongly doubted its ability to offer much increased cooling to the alternator. But since I coughed up the money for it, I keep it in place....

P/N HJA4477AC (Alternator Cooling Duct) now superseded by HJA4477AD is item 2:

I would agree that its benefits for improving cooling are questionable but I can't ever see a situation where it could clog up (arrowed in red).

The tubular section (item 1) could possibly clog but I would certainly say it does do something to direct airflow to the rear of the alternator.
