XK8 if you are a member of JCNA or a Coventry Foundation Patron you can simply borrow the correct tool--which the one pictured is not. Similar but made for a more general application and not a direct design. That job is not without safety concerns--please be careful!
Thanks for the responses. The two prong types just seem to be hard to work with.
I recently used this type of compressor (borrowed from AutoZone) and hope never to do so again. My local Jaguar shop said I should have brought the shock in and they would have removed the spring for me - no charge. Your local report shop would likely do so as well.
I have done coil spring changes on cars before so I assumed the XK8 would be easy. I was replacing the upper shock mounts and found using "stick" spring compressors dangerous. The Jaguar springs have a cone shape, viable spacing and are really strong. I turned up taking them to a indy Jag specialist to have the struts built. Attached is a image of what Jaguar uses to compress the springs, and I found out why.
If you are in the states try the PowerBuilt spring compressor from AutoZone. It's part of their 'loaner' tool program. FREE!!!! I just finished using it on my struts. It's a little tricky but I think it's safer than the simple threaded bolt style compressor in your original post.
204-476 is a massively constructed tool with stud indexes for a totally safe and speedy change. The foundation has one and has been loaned but shipping is costly--but not as costly as a doctor--or mortician.

Thanks, it does help to have a friend with a machine shop. I dream the ideas and he helps me "perfect" them. Works great and is available to anyone who could drive here. How far that is is up to them, LOL. I'd hate to use it for just 4 strut assemblies. TM
Oddly enough they were changing the front springs and mounts in our 2003 XKR today. We snapped these pics of the correct tool. The important art is the plate that mounts the top bushing. It is set up for 4 different Jaguar models marked X,K,S,R. If it would be helpful to anyone we could provide a template of the plate.
BTW when compressed it seemed impossible to use a 2 link compressor. Coil bind would almost have to occur unless the fingers were very slim.
Not recommending anything, but have a look at the web site "VEVOR.com". Once there, look for Spring Compressors.
I bought a floor model like STCTHMSTA above---minus the machine shop silver plates. Have to use a little individual know how to work with it, but mine works fine.
