SRS light
Hello,
I left the ignition on, recharged dead battery which is ok and voilą steady airbag light. It goes off after the initial check but steady within a minute. Car is a 1997 XK8.

Try resetting your computers (remove the negative battery cable and hold it on the positive post for a few seconds).
If that does not fix it, there are two flashing sequences of the SRS light before it goes steady. Count the flashes in each sequence and report back.

cat, you sure its the SRS, not the ABS? The SRS will always flash a two digit sequence, like 2 blinks, pause, 3 blinks...pause, then repeats it again 3 times, THEN the light stays on. Those number sequences indicates which part of the system is having problems. As whitexkr mentioned, if in doubt, the dealer will have to read that for you...and most likely give you some advice as part of the diagnostic service. the SRS is one of the most difficult to fix/troubleshoot since its a sensitive system.
Unfortunatly its the SRS light as depicted on my first post. I'm about to order the Autoenginuity interface. Dealer is far and I plan to investigate the problem myself. Apparently it's possible that when one forgets the ignition on, it can cause the light to come up.

Flashes are for identifying defective SRS peripherals and steady light means SRS module has a code written in it. Clearing that code is done by the PDU when the source of the problem is fixed. Seems that just leaving the switch on and running the battery down is enough to write a code into the module. That can happen to everyone. I could remove the module and have it reset ($49.00) but I would prefer to find a SRS tool and avoid dismantling the facia as the SRS module is against the right A pilar in a left hand drive car. I located a chinese company that says having such a product and waiting for an answer.
The picture on the link is for a different car (MB or BMW) but application shows Jaguar XK....
VAG Auto Airbag Reseter 3.0.4 (car Airbag Resetting Tool), buy Airbag Reseter from gasgoo.com
There are plenty of cheap Airbag tools on the WEB all from Asia. The XK8 SRS module does not use the ISO 9141/2 protocol but uses the same OBD2 connector.

That is a very hard question to answer with certainty. I have never connected a 97 or 98 to check for the additional module communication...why don't you ask that specific question in a new thread - such as 'Experience w/ the AutoEnginuity enhanced features on a 1997?' Might be worth another week or two of research before dropping that amount of money on a scanner.
After a few e-mails with AE, they confirm that AE entry level is not compatible with 1997 XK8, but the enhanced features are?
Here's Bill's response:
"The entry level of our product will not work on your vehicle. This is an issue with Jaguar being non compliant by bringing power out on a data pin. To have any functionality on your vehicle you will have to buy the enhanced coverage."
I used an ELM327 device for years on the XK8 and it worked (on Ford and Chrysler too). Now that I have W7, I can't get the proper USB driver. That's the main reason I was looking for new OBDII reader. With the airbag light, I was trying to find a tool capable of doing both.
I will follow h20boy's advice...

I remember recently, someone had the steady light on (no flashes to proceed it) and it turned out to be a blown fuse for the air bag system. Makes sense if the battery charge was a little too much for that system.
Hello Fred, I never resolved the problem entirely. Previous post might have a point, "blown fuse".
Also driver side seat board malfunction could be also, specially if you have problems with seat and steering memory. Hope you find any clue, could be useful for me.
thanks
