This warning appeared a couple of weeks ago on start up “Stability Control Fail/ Traction Control Fail” on my 98 xk8 but went off after a minute or so, it came on again this morning and went again after a minute, is this a major problem or an easy fix?

Your ABS problem could be from a dirty sensor, poor connection or a breakdown in the ABS unit. This link covers all of that and a little troubleshooting JagRepair.com - ABSModuleRepairs I hope this helps.
