Anyone advise what worn shocks might feel like? and also if anyone out there has an XK8 with play in the steering wheel when driving about 1/4 Inch.

Car does not wander but having not owned any other XK8 not sure if it is normal.

I'm not sure I really understand your question, but here goes. The racks seldom fail on the XK8 models. When they do, it's usually because of leaks, not slop in steering. Shocks are just like any other car. You are looking for excessive bounce.
