The audio control buttons on the steering wheel of my '97 XK8 work randomly. Probably a contact problem. Can anybody tell me how I can access these buttons ? Must I disassemble the airbag first ?

 

Yes sir. Airbag has to be removed. I have a set brand new in the box if you need them.

Do you have an airbag light on? It may not be the controls but rather the clock spring starting to wear out.

No, the airbag light is not on. I will try to know more tomorrow when removing the airbag.

I just repaired a long standing cruise control problem that may relate. When you remove the audio control, open it to access the circuit board, then check continuity from the pins on the board to the pins of the clock spring plug. The wires make some very tight bends coming out of the switch pack, and in my case the ground wire circuit was open due to a damaged connection.

 

After a good cleaning of all contacts and inspecting all the connections, I did nort find anything significant... But now it works great ! Hope it will last a few years !
