Question Strange click noise from idle and up

Dear all,

My name is Tom and i live in Norway. Yesterday i bought my self an 1998 XK8 4.0 V8, that i like a lot. It has only done 71000 Km, and has a full service history.
I had a good look around this fine forum and learned a lot already.
However, i have noticed a "click" (just one) from the front of the engine when rewing up from idle. When i release the throttle again, i can hear the same click again. This happens around approx. 1000-1100 rpm and with warm engine. No other noises abnormal noised can be noticed though.
Inside the car, i can barly hear it.
Do anyone of you fine Jag owners have any tips in this matter.

Thank you in advance

Mine does it also. . An '05 xkr. I've heard others do the same. I believe it is a simple expansion in the exhaust. It does it when the engine is shut off and still hot as well.

You will probably find that is the sound of your VVt solenoids engaging and disengaging, does it around 1300 rpm

Not a problem but you can check it... On the front of the heads you will see a round object with a electrical cable/connector coming from it, put the tips of your fingers on it and rev the engine, you will feel it click as well as hear it

The "click" sound has now been confirmed to be the VVT solenoids (thank you XKRacer). I was first a bit scared regarding the well known chain tensioner issue. Fortunatly, yesterday i checked with the Jaguar dealer in Germany who has done the previous maintenance on the vehicle, and they confirmed that all tensioners and chain guides has been replaced. Lucky me :-)

Here's a longer thread on the problem
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...lenoids-26827/
I do go on about this but always try a Google search for your problem rather than use the site engine. I put 'Ticking XK VVT' in and got this as the first hit.
I knw you didn't know it was the VVT at first but it's a useful way of getting more info.
Good luck!

Hi Steve,
Thank you for your information. I have already been into this thread, but to me the thread seems to concern "ticking noise". However, i do only have one "click" when idling up, and then one "click" on retarding. At first i was afraid that it may be caused by "slack" (excessive play) in the cam chain(s). Fortunatly it's not.
