Strange Heater Problems
My heater works well when in the "down" setting for warming the footwell only. If I put it on auto it still blows warm down, but not up top. Put on top feed only and it blows cold air. I have read all the threads on heater problems, but most seem to address either total failures or overall lukewarm heating. Mine seems to be literally running both hot and cold.
I have had this issue since last year, but the winters are mild here and warming from the footwell was good enough on all but the coldest days.
I thought perhaps it was a vent directional issue (stuck flap/directional duct), but switching between all down or all up air clearly changes the flow. Just doesn't convey the heat. The A/C works fine in all settings.
So before I start tearing into what I read to be a time-consuming effort with the heat pump and hoses, is there any wisdom from this group on what I should focus my attention on?

I'm having a similar issue on my XJ8 but I have NO idea if the systems on the XJ and the XK are similar or not.
But, FWIW check out this thread in the current XJ8 section:

Also do a forum search for XKs with these issues.

Thanks Norm, the thread did give me some reinforcement on possible issues.
Just noting that mine is a top to bottom issues, not side to side. The XK8/R models do not have dual heat controls.

After much fiddling today, it appears that I can make heat come out the dash vents somewhat, but only if I use the dash-only setting. Floor-only setting still works and actually gets warmer.
Sound like a weak heat pump to everyone else?
Not sure I want to tackle this labor intensive job given the relatively mild winters here. Guess we'll see unless someone has a guess on a simpler fix.
