Had an issue over the weekend, 1997 XK8. Drove for a couple of hours, went to grab lunch. Came back, started the car, couldn't get it out of park. Got a bunch of error messages: trunk open, bonnet open, driver side door is open, passenger side door is open, washer fluid is low, etc. Restarted the car about five times and it all went away, no issues since. Any ideas what happened, it was a pretty scary experience as I was about 200 miles away from home.

How old is your battery? What you described falls into the classic "failing battery" category....

 

Replaced last year, I was having issues with the computer last year and the battery was replaced at that time.

 

Must have been scary. Do you know how to bypass the lock in park?

 

not really, is there a latch somewhere that needs to get depressed?

 

There's a small cap next to the gear selector, open it and push the key gently in the hole while selecting the gear.

I have experienced the locking in park once. I disconnected the battery cable for a few minutes to reset the car, that remedied the situation.
