Default Stumped..XK8 making noticeble clunking/rattling from upper drivers side dash area

Ok, so when I go over bumps, I get a noise that seems to originate in the dash area....the drivers side...top near windshield...or is this a noise being transmitted from the underneath of the car...upon doing a visual inspection on the drivers side ...inside the engine bay and underneath the car...nothing is just jumping out and saying Im broke..fix me...please give your input....the car drives tight.....thanks

could be a cross-bracket at the top of the engine bay, easy to check.

Also, small bumps often heard inside the cabin can be related to worn sway bar bushings, you'd be surprised how loud they are when the bar hits the lower subframe. Passenger side seams the get beaten the most (at least mine did)

Also, the engine mounts are filled with fluid, so if one tears or gets a leak, the engine will bounce atop the mount over bumps. IIRC, driver side is usually first to bite it, with the engine torque 'pulling' the mount. All very easy to diagnose if you look in the right place.

I had the same clunking sound, and a few weeks ago took it into the shop, and it turned out to be the front sway bar bushings, replaced, and it's completely quiet now. Search this forum, as I did, and you will find it's a common problem. I just turned 75K mi.

So, I called the dealer, and they of course mentioned the sway bar bushings...if i could be so lucky, however they also mentioned the shock tower/springs mountings in the upper shock tower.....i can not duplicate the sound by jumping up an down on the door opening...quite funny to watch though....the sound is only present of course when i go ovder bumps....i have tackled many jobs on this car such as the fuel pump....PITA!!! is it that hard to remove the shock and spring assembly??

any other ideas....

would bad sway bar bushings resonate the sound to where it sounds like it is under the dash.....im leaning towards shocks/springs area now????

Yes, it can. But considering you can do the bushings for $40 total in parts, labor yourself, its well worth a try. The upper mounts, could be suspect, and can contact the body if they are truly worn. Do you notice lots of orange crumbles on top of your mount? Is the shock bolt-n-nut offcenter visually? You can also measure distance from shock bolt to body on passenger side, then compare with driver. If its considerably different, that's another clue to consider.

I had the same sound, open the hood and look at the shock towers and if you see rubber mount falling apart, that is probably what it is.

Using a putty knife, gently pry the Dash Speaker(s) loose and check the Dash Mounting Bolts for tightness.

Also, the Center Bolt under the Plastic Cover.

When its making the noise, press on the plastic piece at the bottom of the windsheild where the defroster vents are. Mine rattles sometimes when it hits the windshild when cold out.
