Exclamation Supercharger Belt Problems!

Hey all,

My car has been feeling very weird lately so I decided to check under the hood when I noticed my Supercharger belt has been slowly stripping away!

I have I Mina Pulley and I put a new belt on it not too long ago.

How is this possible?

It wasn't an XKR but I've had something similar happen when the springs in the tensioner got tired. It wasn't holding enough pressure on the belt and let it jump up on the raised edge of the pulley which proceeded to saw off a strip of belt.

If you just recently changed the pulley another possibility is that it isn't quite strait letting the belt walk. Or that the smaller size reduced the tension just enough that the first problem can happen.

Have you noticed squealing right after start up?

I haven't noticed a squeak noise yet.

Do you know where I can buy a new belt? Maybe better one

I have some squealing right after startup. I have a 100k service coming up in a while, where the accessory and supercharger belt should be exchanged. Or could the squealing be a warning signal that tells me to exchange the belts straight away?

Rock auto carries several brands belts for reasonable prices. RockAuto Auto Parts

A discussion about good belts would probably go about as well as good tires, or good oil or good gas.

Watch it closely, my GTi ate several belts before I figured out the tired tensioner problem.

I have a slight squeal on start too (70k). I grumbled about the noise at my last service and the belt was fine but they cleaned it after which it stayed quiet for about 5k miles. If i have to clean it at oil changes to keep it quiet, that is tolerable in my opinion, but I did buy a new Goodyear belt (both of them) for when the time comes.

100k is the replacement interval for the supercharger belt, so if yours hasn't been done, it may be time.

You may want to change the bearings of the pulleys/idlers as well, if they are severely worn could misalign the belt, and they are just a couple of dollars per bearing. Have good experiences with the gates belts, so can advise them.

I'm using the goodyear gator belt with no issues on my XKR with 2.6'' pulley. I believe the size was different than stock - are you still using the stock belt after the pulley change?

Are you sure the pulley is properly aligned on the shaft? The end of the pulley closest to the front end should be completely flat with the shaft end (you can double check with a ruler straight edge).

Actually, 50 K is the factory supercharger belt replacement interval. I did notice in the picture of the belt that the belt is not the correct type. The OEM belt has ribs on both sides of the belt. This could explain the problem.

I've seen a couple variants of the service interval table. I have one for all 2003 models that has the SC belt very 100k and the accessory belt at 150k. Is there one of these correct, or do different regions get different standards?

Promosv,

Do you have a link for this belt you speak of?

I had an aftermarket pulley with a new OEM belt

Just had my 2005MY XKR in with the dealers due massive oil leak. The belts had to be replaced and they said that Jaguar had changed the supercharger belt so I had to have new pulleys as well.
It's only money.

I think they went to the two sided belt in 2003 the earlier R's had a one sided belt like the one pictured. I don't know which year Miami's XKR is he doesn't have it on his post.

Mine is 2004 and single sided, I believe the double sided belt came in with the XK150. Jaguar no longer stock the single sided belt so if being changed by a dealer they have to carry out modifications, to enable the double sided version to fit! Added expense!!

As stated, the single sided belt is still available from other sources

As I understood it, there was a TSB for the "noisy belt" problem that involved changing out the pulleys and converting to a very expensive Jaguar only double sided belt.

Seems like one of those "charge the customer until he stops complaining" kind of solutions.

Our XK range never got the double sided belt from the factory, that was for the later models, it only became available later for our range.

Some indeed have, even 4.0 cars, just not from the factory.

Avos,

Do you know what type of "Gates" belt I would need with my Mina Pulley?

Thank you

Have no idea what size your pulley is, but to give you an example, a stock 4.2 fits the K080525, and if you have a upper 2.6 pulley you can fit the K080514.
