Do you have a top pulley or bottom pulley conversion? The only time I have seen similar to this sort of wear is when a wrong bottom pulley was fitted, a 4.0 to a 4.2, the spacing is different and caused the belt to jump the pulley.....

Stay away from the double sided set up, expensive, did not cure the problem and restricts your tuning possibilities, I have converted quite a few back to single sided belts

Tony,
What's involved in going back to a single sided belt?
A gates K080525 from Amazon is $29. I dread to think how much the Jag belt will cost.

You can get away with just changing the tensioner but you are suppose to change the idler as well, if you also have the auxillary belt double sided, that is a lot more involved

I'm missing something on this discussion as it pertains to a stock from the factory set up. My 2006 xkr came from the factory with the double sided ribbed belt. Why did Jaguar change the design from single sided to double sided belt? What model year did they make the change? Based on earlier posts it sounds like Jag retrofitted the doulble sided belt on some models which meant that the auto tensioner and idler pulley had to be changed to accomodate the double sided belt. It appears that the 2006 xkr came from the factory with this revision as standard.

I forgot to add that Gaudin Jaguar wants around $60 for the S/C belt.

At that price it isn't worth thinking about changing back.
Both belts on my 2004 are double sided.

The newest XKR (steel bodied) I saw myself had vin 47390, and was single sided. Just checked one on ebay with vin A47646, which also has the single sided version, and these where one of the last ones made, where I think A48684 was the last one.

What VIN number do you have?

My xkr was manufactured in March 2005 with vin A46302. Maybe Jag was running through all the left over components.

Checked the parts catalogue, and the double sided belt started from VIN B17759, not sure which year). Also the TSB JTB00045 states the same, so all Aluminum XK series until vin B17758 (2007 year) and all steel bodied are susceptible to the squeal issue, where you should swap to the double sided belt system.

So it’s odd you already had it from the factory this early, but the dual sided belts where already used in in 2005 on the Range rover engines.

I assume Jag was trying to fix a slip problem on the single sided belt. One thing is for sure---I'd better be sure the dealer understands what should be supplied when i change the belt. Sounds like you have to change the auto tensioner/idler if going from double sided to single sided belt and vice-versus.
XKRacer stated that he's not a big fan of the double sided belt because it didn't cure the slip problem and tuning---please expand on this I'm curious how it would effect tuning on the ECM.

There aren't that many different sizes double sided belts, so it limits you in changing upper/lower pulleys, it has nothing to do with the ECM.

To update this old thread I have finally found JTB-00045. This has the part numbers for the upgraded SC belt and Idler pulley as well as the drive belt.

I had this done on my 2005 STR under warranty but just recently lost the SC idler pulley and shredded the belt too!

Gates belts are by far the best if you can get one to fit. on my diesel motor bus coach there was 6 belts .I would lose at least one pr year until i changed to gates, never lost another in 5 years and 30k mls.

+1 on Gates belts.

Problem is that none of the usual belt manufacturers make the special ribbed on both sides version called for in the TSB, so you're stuck getting it from Jaguar.

tbird,
If it's any use to you, I have a good, used idler for the "upgraded" belt off of a 4.2L XKR.

My 06 R came with a double sided belt and I replaced it at 40K with another. My manual calls for replacement of this belt at 40K miles. The new belt was from NAPA and was a Gates belt. I'm not sure why a double sided belt is needed, since the drive is on only one side of the belt. It was fairly pricey at about $50. I do get a small amount of chirping on cold starts, but it could be the serpentine belt doing it, not sure.

I just remembered I got the belt at BAP/GEON, not NAPA.
