Default Supercharger info please.

I have a 2001 XKR. It has the smaller overdriven SC pully (2.75"). I have been blowing seals on this every year. I read in here somewhere that the newer 4.2 motors SC seals will interchange and that they are stronger.
I call Jag parts and they say the 4.2 cars have a completely different induction system, and that the seals do not interchange.
1. Is it true that they do not interchange?
2. If they interchange, are the 4.2 seals better at holding increased boost?
Thanks for any help in clearing this up for me.

There is a kit that includes the seal plates and seals. You can't use just the newer ridged seals with the older plates, otherwise you'll suck those in also. Well, you can if you Dremel a groove in them like I once had to do.

Jaguar addressed this issue almost 15 years ago.

Thanks for the guidance guys! My mechanic has worked on these cars for a fairly long time and says that in the last few years the seals he gets from Jag are form a different manufacturer and that they are much more prone to failure than the older ones. He put a fresh set in yesterday and test drove the car and upon deceleration he popped a seal. The aftermarket kit looks like the way to go. I will change over to that when this set goes out.

The SEALS are not the issue. The CLAMP PLATES are redesigned and are supposed to hold the seal more securely!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

Bob, The seals are blowing out/ tearing on the unsupported surfaces. Rips big sections out. Not the clamps. 3rd seal set in three months. I just ordered the "upgraded" parts from Eurotoys.
I should have them installed next week. I'll let you know how it goes.
Wish me luck. Does anyone have a video of changing these?
Thanks again
Will

Smile Willtoliv and his blown XKR

As Bob has said, It's not the Seals that's the problem, It's the Clamp-Plates....The problem is that the Clamp-Plates are smooth and the Rubber Seals are sliding between the Clamps and being sucked in when you let off on the gas...The new Clamps have Reverse groves (teeth) that hold-on to the Seals so they can't move around......It's really Jaguar's answer but the ones from Eurotoys are your answer......My 2005 came with Jaguar's upgrade....The original Clamp-Plates and Seals were not made for our Big Pulley, Little Pulley over blown Superchargers....We are pushing at a minimum 10 or so extra Lbs. of pressure on the Seals.......I don't know of any directions or You tube movies on how to do the job.....I would just get a wrench and go at it....looks simple enough.............Eurotoys will probably send directions also!

It isn't technically difficult, but I will say that the original clamp plates are a very soft aluminum. I had to helicoils the plates after 2 removal/installs. Maybe Eurotoys has done a better job at it.

The revised rubber boots have a extra lip molded into them that goes into a receiving groove on each plate. This locks them in unlike the originals that were smooth.

I have never had the threads go on the original plates, have had many off. Do not drain the coolant, just remove the 4 bolts on the s/c outlet and then all of the bolts on the plate/duct seal assembly and slide it out. Once you have everything in front of you it will be clear on what to do, just do 1 boot at a time.

Uh, as Bob said the clamps were the problem....sort of. My local Jag Specialist kept putting the upgrade seals into the old style clamps. 3 sets of seals in 2 months. I got the new setup from Mike at EuroToys and it all became clear to me when I installed the set. The old clamps were destroying the seals! Disappointed in the Jag "Specialist" for not getting this. Thanks to Mike and you folks at Jag Forum.

Smile As Bob stated!

wiltoliv,

Looking back over this thread, I see that Bob stated that Jaguar had addressed this issue almost 15 years ago and even sent you a copy of the TSB....I can't imagine why your Jag Tech didn't know this and wonder where he got the wrong replacement Seals in the first place............

When Bob tells you something about our X-100's it's Golden! Also, Mike at Eurotoys has been working with our XKR's for a long time and he has years of experience with the 4.0 and the 4.2 Supercharger speed Pulleys, Intercooler and large water pump for the system....I'm surprised that your Jag Guy's supplier is apparently still sending him the wrong Seals.....?

I'm glad you called Mike and got the proper parts installed on your intercooler! Now you can have fun again!
