Surging at 1500 rpm XKR 2006
After receiving my XKR 2006 (MY) coupe (68,000km) three weeks ago I have noticed the apparently common surge problem at around 1500rpm.
Though my research on the various threads on the matter I have understood that the possible culprit is the Torque Converter. I have looked at the TSBs attached to the threads, and they seem to relate to earlier model XKRs. Would it not be reasonable to assume that they got this sorted by 2005?
I bought my car from the national Jag dealer and it came with a one year/15,000km guarantee. I am scheduled to drop the car off soon to have the issue looked at, and want to be as independently informed as possible before I discuss the matter with them.
Before the car was taken over they informed me that the transmission fluid had been changed. I read this small service as somewhat suspicious since the normal service interval on this appears to be 100,000km based on what I have read on this forum.
Would it not seem likely that they were aware of the problem, changed the trans. fluid and hoped that it would resolve the problem? I understand that the wrong fluid can also cause this problem to be worse, so I will be asking what fluid they used.
Otherwise, it seems the problem for me is constant regardless of the car being warm, in sport mode or with the air con. off.
Hope some of you can shed some light so that I am best informed before my meeting with Jaguar Norway.
Cheers... Mark.

There is no service interval for the tranny fluid, but I think it should be changed at approx 60,000 miles to ensure a long tranny life. If it has been changed with incompatible fluid (ZF says that Lifeguard 6 is the only compatible fluid), improper additives could cause clutch slip in the torque converter or in the tranny itself and produce your problem. Even low fluid level wil cause slipping. I would get the fluid flushed and the filter pan replaced with the correct stuff before doing anything else. Thia is a fairly pricey job, running around $500 in most locations. Once done, you will know that this is correct and be able to diagnose better.
