On a footnote:

This thread pretty much addresses my issue.
At least the defects are consistent.

This little extra width is the difference between a frayed edge and not.

UPDATE!!

I guess it pays to look under the hood.

Changed the pulley as I suspected, and sure enough trouble was in fact brewing.

For curious minds:
