This is a risk I never took and why I modified my Cupholder :-)

Save yourself some time by just going ahead and dumping the contents of your cup all over your lap. These XK8/XKR cupholder assemblies should never be trusted....

Actually the 16 oz cup fit down in there pretty snuggly....much more so than what I remember on my 97 or my 96 XJ6.

Of course I was driving down the NYS Thruway, so no lateral forces were encountered.

Believe me I would have posted pictures if it went flying!!!

I want to glue mine shut. Should I use Cyanoacrylate?

The real bottle holder is the space between the seat belt buckle and side bolster. Try it. Works whether the seat is occupied or not.
