97 xk8 coupe
tech was leaning on the arm rest and pop, cup holder broke
so I have it out ready for fix or replace but I see lotsa complaints on the web about these xk8 cup holders
so before replacing with same
is there an after market cup holder that fits and is better built?
I'll be interested to hear other answers but suggest that it's better to leave the drink holders broken and forget the idea. Mine were broken but still usable with a little fiddling, when I got my 2006 XJ8 coupe, two years ago. As soon as I tried to use them, I discovered that any drink placed therein was v much in the way and in danger of getting knocked over and spilled. Soon thereafter, I noticed coffee or Coke stains on the carpet on the other side of the console, where some previous driver had knocked over a drink or two.
I now keep a small bottle of water tucked behind the seatbelt buckle and have resigned myself to have no other beverages in my Jag.
Agreed. The cup holders are poorly designed and manufactured. And certainly should not be used for tumblers.
But mine broke in such a way that if my arm leans at all on the arm rest, the cupholder falls out of place. So would like to fix it just to stop that.
if there is no "store bought" fix, I might try a home remedy. Some malleable plastic and glue.
In fact, a home remedy might be better.
pic shows broken out piece pic shows the broken out piece of plastic which allows the shaft to fall out

so the home remedy
New cup holder expensive. So...
Bought some heat malleable plastic and JB Weld Plastic Bonder
Used one piece to fill the gap, used a second to secure first in place.
Shaft did not dislocate to manual pressure but...
Will re-install and see what my elbow does.
The first piece of advice I got after buying my X100 was regarding the cup holders. Even before the tensioners.
Cup holder often fails. When operational it works better to distribute contents of cup(s) over back seat before hand as that is where contents will end up when under heavy acceleration - this is normal. You can also dump it in your lap or the passengers lap if you plan to turn first. Either action saves a step and comes as less of a surprise.
Most european cars I've owned; Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Jaguar, etc; have garbage cupholders. It appears they get too creative with swingout, popup, and other designs. My X150 XKR has better cupholders than the X100; but they still aren't great. Best I've ever had have been just cheap crap molded ones in a 97 Dodge Neon. They held cans, 20ozers, big gas station cups (44oz like) and NEVER had issues. It appears the Jaguar designed cupholders are like those old cupholders built into pickup truck glove boxes; they are ONLY for use when parked.

Cup Holders Open Armrest side Arm rest open (the switches are there because I also put in a double DIN radio) Cup holders out open. Cup holders fron of armrest closed.
Part of the problem with the cup holders is their location, the armrest. The other 2 problems are that they have a 2 inch gap to the sides through which the drinks can slide out of, and that the surface inside the cup holders is made of slippery plastic that does not provide any grip to the cups.
I posted on the cup holder I fabricated on 9-5-2017,titled cup holder, by Thomasso. May not be your cup of tea,but works for me. Originals are junk, even if not broken they wont hold most cups
