Default Throttle body problem

I must be going for the record, first I had the petrol wash problem then today the throttle body problem the car is a 1997 XK8

I gave the car a bit of full throttle for about 30 seconds, it kicked down and took off like they do then I took my foot off the gas to slow down, the Check Engine display light came up then Engine Stalled and I coasted to a stop with no power steering or power brakes.

I stopped, started it up and now it's fine, drove the 15 miles back at normal speeds without so much as a hiccup, is this an easy fix, I know jaguar say fit a new throttle body but there must be a fix available.

One things for sure, I won't be doing that again

Have you had the Throttle Body Service Action for '97 cars done? Jaguar is still honoring that until the end of the year.

I was going to mention the throttle body extension but I can see you got that and I would recommend you take advantage of it. After December of this year the throttle body will cost you around $2000,00.

Did you get an OBD code? Did you get Restricted Performance or Failsafe indication? At what speed did this take place? We need additional information…

Does the throttle body service action include 98 models also?

Default Service Action S514 Throttle Body

Here are the affected VIN's on the S514 Service Action. It is reported that version 5 to this SA extended the application until December 31, 2009.

'97-'98 XK VIN 001036 through 020734 reprogram ECM.
'98 XK VIN 020735 through 031302 new throttle body.

If you are in the affected VIN ranges and do not have a label affixed to the Driver 'B' column attesting to the application of the SA you might want to discuss with your dealer . . . shortly.

Right I didn't know that, when I bought the car the original engine had a bottom end knock, I found out about the throttle body replacement while it was being replaced, unfortunately it wasn't on the road by the time the 30th June cutoff date came so I missed it.

I wasn't aware they'd extended it so i'll be ringing them in the morning, hopefully they fact the engine has been replaced won't affect their decision to change the throttle body as it's still the same throttle body as was fitted to the original engine.

I haven't connected the car to a scanner to retrieve any OBD codes, all that came up on the dash display was Check engine, then engine stalled, the car has driven fine since

Thanks for the advice about the throttle body, I just hope it applies in the UK

Guys,

Thanks so much for the service action info. I called the Jaguar dealer in Monterey and he said bring it in and they'll replace the throttle body - free! I haven't had any problems yet - but better safe than sorry considering the part alone is $2000.

Default hi

Has anyone had this done in the UK, or does anyone know if this is available over here. Also, where exactly is the sticker located?

thanks

First check your vin number then see if it falls in line with the vin listing that Test Point posted. As for The Throttle Body service action being honored in the UK I think it is but to be sure go to http://www.xclusively-jaguar.co.uk/xj04_fandi.html I found them to be extremely helpful. Please let us know.

In the US, if you call Jaguar USA and give them the VIN, they can tell you what TSBs are outstanding. Any dealer should give you the same info.

By the way, reprogramming of the ECU may not solve the problem. If it doesn't, Jaguar WILL NOT replace the TB unless your VIN is in the range mentioned.

You can often find new version TBs on eBay, and there also are services that will now rebuild your old TB (although I can't vouch for either)

Thank you "Test Point". I just had my Throttle Body replaced today at NO CHARGE!! (Funny to read that about a Jaguar Service). This was simple. I called the service department and had the gentleman check the computer for the recall extension S514 (He had no idea this was still active). I gave him my last (6) digits on my VIN and Bingo! I scheduled the appointment and got it done. Thanks again. Oddly enough, this is the only time I have ever had to have my XK8 serviced.

Mine has now been into Jaguar, it falls into the reprogram category so that's all they've done.

I'm a bit annoyed by this, when I got the car it was booked in to have this work done on 29/6/09, the day before the original cut off date but it wasn't on the road so I didn't make it, they were insistent if it wasn't done by 30/6 i'd have to pay.

when I asked how much I was told around £1000 for the throttle body + fitting, I phoned them on the 30th telling them I wouldn't be able to make the date so it wasn't coming in.

It's been fine for 3 months then it cut out which led to my post on here, the reasons i'm annoyed are

A there's a cutoff date at all for somthing that has the potential to kill you.
B They made no attempt to contact me to tell me the date had been extended despite having all my details, if it wasn't for you guys I wouldn't have known about it.
C I was told it was going to be £1000 + when all it needed was 5 mins on the computer.
