Default Timing chain tensioners

I recently bought a 1998 XK8 with 85,000 miles on it. The guy I got it from said there had been some work done on it before he got it about five years ago but could not locate the paperwork describing what had been done. Is there a way to tell if the timing chain tensioners have been replaced? Are newer ones a different material, a different color, or is there some other identifying aspect?

Yes, you need to remove the lids on the chains and you can see the tensioners. The old ones are with a plastic body, where the newer ones are with an aluminium body. The guide are also updated, but I can't tell you exactly how. Still the clearest tell is the material of the tensioner.
