Default Too clean?

I have been obsessing about my 2005 xk8 recently, to wit:
The weather has been so nice that I wax it once a week, the wax makes washing it so easy it gets washed every time I drive it, the windshield gets a bit of dust now and then and I spray it with Rain-X Glass Cleaner.
Big surprise for me…I noticed that the windshield seemed a little foggy under certain light. I’d spray it with Rain-X Glass Cleaner and it looked about the same. One day last week I was so convinced of the fogginess that I stripped the Rain-X and cleaned with ammonia… a clear(er) windshield was a result.
I had also been having sporadic wiper activation, no longer. My thought is that the light reflections were playing havoc with the sensor and causing the wiper to activate.
I guess I’ll clean and wax a tiny bit less.

I have always found Rain-X products to make a mess on our automotive glass. I quit using it a decade or so ago, and our automotive glass gradually cleared up as time passed with me cleaning it with nothing but water, a squeegee, and an old cotton diaper. It took months to finally get 100% of the residual Rain-X product off the glass. I threw my Rain-X bottle in the garbage and never looked back....

I have moved my bottles into the bathroom cleaning supplies area, hoping it won't haze up the shower door!

I do a 10 minute detail on my coupe every other day. It's parked in the driveway, partial shade, so gets that layer of condensation and dust that is super annoying.
Being in Ca, we have water restrictions, so a full wash weekly at home is not in the cards, and I do not use car wash places...

Griot's makes an incredible product called SPEED SHINE it is by far the best that I have used. End result is a super slick, non-oily glossy shine. I literally spray the car off with water in the shade to quickly to loosen dust, then spray each panel with a mist of speed shine, let sit for 5 seconds, then using moderate pressure, buff out with a very high quality microfiber. After the car is done, get a clean microfiber and buff again. Dont skimp on towel quality, it makes a HUGE difference.

They make several products and I am super happy with them. I use their wax every 6 months, and Their tire shine is amazing as well.

Add my name to the Rain-X detractors. It went in the bin together with ArmorAll.

A clean windscreen sheds light rain more effectively and delays the point where wipers become necessary. Clay bar makes a good start to get rid of contaminents on the glass before washing.

Jaguar used to include "clean screen with Jaguar Screen Clean Paste" in their service schedules although this appears to have been dropped in later models:

As Jaguar has a commercial tie-in with Autoglym, I expect this is just a re-labelled product. Several other equivalent brands and equally efficacious products are available.

Not too long ago there was a thread about using old school Bon Ami, I'm going to give that a try.

the Bon Ami to use is the one in the red can which is the original formula. It works very well. The regular yellow can version could be too abrasive. It can be found online.

Double aut (00) steel wool is also very effective. Used on a dry windshield 10 minutes of mild pressure rubbing will completely remove anything on the glass leaving it smooth, and clear. Lots of U-tube videos on this trick.

She cannot remove the smears and streaks after 6 months of cleaning..I Mentioned the BOnami...hope it helps her, the shower looked hazy a nd not quite elegant.

It seems the cleaner I keep my car, the more the birds want to soil it. Interesting info on the window glass. My biggest problem with the glass is people always shutting the door by pushing on the window glass and leaving smudges. @!*%.

Regards,
Of course you can use steel wool, 00 or 000 or 0000 to clean your windshield.
Let me share my experiences.
I operated a restoration shop for over 25 years and we used 0000 steel wool to clean windshields of overspray etc. It was/is my default go to but and I want to underscore the BUT...I also had some employees that thought if they rubbed a little harder on some areas it would remove some sort of haze. The haze was in fact made up of very fine scratches in the glass, the the harder they rubbed the more they scratched the glass. Some exotics' windshields (older italian mostly) were without a doubt easier to scratch. I (only) replaced three windshields due to our negligence over this 25 year course of time...always caused by overzealous individuals rubbing harder.
My reply to your initial posting should have read,
"If you want o use steel wool, do so with some care."
