Default traction control fail/stability control fail

These just came up while my wife was driving. Also the ABS light was on as well. What should I look for? I have looked in the forums for similar problems but all relate to what codes are being sent. I do not have a code reader. If I was to buy a scan tool what would I be looking at spending and what brand should I persue?

Right now the first thing you need to do any time you receive a fault is to read the OBD codes and write them down. When you do that let us know what they are and what you were doing when it took place and we will try to help. Most AutoZones or the like will provide the service free.

When she arrived at one stop the lights were on. upon restart no lights were on. and after several more stops no lights. Knowing her route home I doubt the car went above 35-40 mph. Mainly stop and go thru neighborhood streets. No interstate driving. Can I presume there should not be any driving issues between here and Carquest to check the codes. This is about a 12 mile drive.

I am unable to tell you that the car is safe or unsafe to drive. However, on a wet road and my lead foot when I accelerate and the ground is wet the tires will spin and the traction control light will go on. My best guess is that it is ok, however use caution and common sense.

Good news and bad news. I purchased a scan tool today for obd 2 that also features live feed. Sounds impressive. Can't wait to read the manuel. Plugged it up and got this code. P1111 with something to the effect that everything is okay. I have called around and have discovered that there is such a thing as an ABS code reader as well. I did not know that. Autozone here close does not read ABS codes. But I can purchase this reader from Sears on line thru store to get free shipping for 189.00 The reader is made by Actron (spelling). Have any of you had any history with this brand. If I were to in the meantime to just clean the sensors prior to the arrival of the reader can any one instruct me on this procedure?

That is good news! As for the OBD Reader, take your time and if you elect to get one, get the one that will do what you want. In the mean time go to AutoZone, it is free! As for the OBD reader you can get one that is software that is installed on your laptop and covers just about every application. I have on and use it often. However, I would not recommend the one I have to anyone. The technical support if I could rate them from 1 to 10 they would be a -2. I had to go to the owner to get the support I needed.

Good Luck!

Is there any way to clean these sensors. I was just on youtube to search for diy wheel sensor video's and learned more than what I knew. I would think you could clean the end of the probe but the likely hood of that being the problem is remote. But I'll call a few more Autozone's to see if they have the abs reader. We'll keep you posted. The scan tool I bought does have the software with it. I'll load that later.

I have the Auto Enginuity tool its a little high price with the Jaguar module but it has great features for keeping your cat healthy. I haven't figured out all of the bells and whistles yet, and you really need two people on board when your running the Speed Chaser which analyzes vehicle performance. I have no financial interest in the company, I just think this is a awsome tool, especially if your putting aftermarket part for performance. It will tell you if they actually work or not.

I just got thru cleaning 10 years of stuff off all 4 sensors. I used electronic parts cleaner to clean the tips and brake cleaner to clean the gear. After cleaning I took some 220 wet/dry and sanded the front gears. I also lightly sanded the sensor just to clean the pits out of the 3 bars exposed the sensor.
I'll be contacting a friend who owns a brake shop tomorrow to see if he has an ABS reader and let me know what codes come up. Hopefully the cleaning was the problem. The drivers rear had the biggest build up of grime.

If this does work I'll probably just do it everytime I rotate the tires. Will keep you posted.

The scan tool I got was mfg by Innova model 1303. Sears for 179.00 Still getting use to learning. Its like on of those sceintific calculators you got for your kids in high school. Lots of functions

My friend could not read any abs codes. Does anyone know if these codes are proprietary to Jag? He also cautioned me on doing any abrasive cleaning on the exciter gears so as to not disturbe the air gap. Well its a little lat for that. But so far after 60+ miles from 25 to 90 mph and stop and go no display of the ABS light or display warnings. I plan on contacting Actron to inquire about the compatability of their ABS reader and its ability to read Jag codes. I'll let you know what I find out.

All I know daddyo, is you pay another $250 for the AutoEnginuity's scanner to read the enhanced functions for jags...TCM, ECM, ABS, A/C, body modules, and alot more.

check out the screen capture of the ABS live data. You sure could determine which sensor is jacked up if this works like it should.

Gus, thanks...good to know!

We will check into the auto enginuity scanner. I would guess sears will take this one back? Also Actron's ABS brakecode scanner will not read Jag codes.

Lunch time drive produced no codes. Did some spirited driving and cornering with not codes coming up!

I realize this is an old thread, but I just experienced the same thing as daddyo007 today. Returning from a 200 mile trip, 98 degrees out, very hot, all highway driving. At about 175 miles the stability control fail message appeared on my 1999 XK8, along with the ABS light. I pulled over, shut off the car and waited 5 minutes. Restarted and the message was gone and did not appear for the rest of the trip.

I am wondering if something got overheated, and it reset once I shut it off? The braking felt normal, before/during/and after the message appeared.

Will have to keep an eye on this going forward.

Dave, this is apparently a very common problem. It usually caused by one of two things; either dirty wheel speed sensors, or a bad solder joint in the ABS module. Both are fixable by a novice. The wheel speed sensors are super-easy to clean. The bad solder joint is a little more complicated, but it's do-able, too. Here are links to the instructions to fix both problems:

Cleaning the wheel speed sensors
Repairing ABS Solder Joint

Cleaning the sensors is the place to start since it is so easy.

I had the same issue this week. I found that the connector pins on the passanger front abs sensor had never been crimped. when I pulled the connector to clean the sensor, the wires pulled right out of the plug. I was able to get the plug apart and get the pins out (again they had never been crimped). I soldered the wires to the pins, reassembled, and problem solved.
