Transmission clunks, no codes
Hi, I'm a Newbie to the forum, but not to Jags. My N/A '99 XK8 w/104K miles has a trans. problem.
When warm (20-30 minutes driving), I'll come to a stop, and as I'm taking off, I'll give it a little gas and there is a slight hesitation, then it slams into gear with a severe clunk. I feel this is what destroys the A drum, according to other threads on this and other forums. It seems that it doesn't apply the forward clutch at the stop until it's given some throttle. I have checked the fluid at proper temp, and it's full.
Now, my question is whether this is a problem with the hard parts or possibly a solenoid problem. This does not happen at every stop, though it is getting more frequent. Trans shifts perfectly any other time. I have owned this car for about a year, no history before that.
My XJ8 has the same trans, but rebuilt by the PO, and the XK8 feels comparable, with the exception of the clunk. Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Larry

It sounds like 'the lurch', its a common symptom of the earlier ZF transmissions, some worse than others, and also theoretically can be corrected (or reduced) by TCM programming upgrades. You could also try a hard reset of the car's computers (TCM included) by removing the negative cable from the battery and briefly touching the positive terminal. The TCM will have to relearn your driving styles and may help your situation. Mine does it from time to time. I learn to avoid the California stop signs (roll then slightly gas it) and I've almost eliminated my occurrences.
