P1722
Transmission oil level low
transmission Selector cable adjustment / installation incorrect
Output speed sensor problem (Refer to P0721 Possible Causes)
Transmission mechanical failure
I would look at shifter adjustment first.....possible rotary switch alignment. Do the lights on the J-Gate light up normally? Manual shift mode too?

It is actually starting in 5th gear. Limp home mode. I would take it to dealer, pay the 1 hour diag and have them diagnose in person. It could be the output speed sensor. They can monitor that.
Likely you are going to end up putting in trans.
As for the XJ and XK....should be the same trans, but you can speak to dealer parts dept and see.

same trani.. but if vins are too far apart will have no cruise.. control
