I installed my new Trans pan today and did everything as your video stated.

I have a BIG problem now. My transmission is skipping into gears.
I will try to describe it as best as possible.

When going up in my gears right when the trans is about to shift I feel a slip and the car revs up about 500rpms then it catches.

Why is this happening?!

 

It sounds like your fluid is too low. That causes air pockets, and air is compressible, transmission fluid is not. When the air pocket hits the torque converter the engine can spin without a load on it until more fluid gets into the torque converter.

 

There's an easier way to ad more fluid without having to jack up the car. In the engine bay on the left side of the car there's a hose that goes to the transmission cooler. You can easily disconnect the hose with the engine OFF, then pour some fluid into the hose. It will drain down into the pan. The problem, though, is that you won't know when it's full. You might end up over or under filling it. But, if you're having the problem that you're describing, I'd guess you're at least a liter low.

Somewhere on this site there's a picture that shows the hose I'm talking about. I'll try to find it.

An oil change is an oil change--as long as they use a proper filter. If you'd rather use someone else do your maintenance, look for a good independent shop.

I generally use car dealership service departments only for warranty work.

Laying under a car watching the oil drain is therapy for the soul, and sometimes the only peace I get all week.

 

I don't think a dealer touched the car. He bought the parts online and did the work himself.

 

I am with Sam on this one. Sounds like your buddy did not get the right amount of fluid replaced. Did he warm the transmission to the proper temp and run through the gears while in the air?

Also, there was some discussion a while back about whether the 6 liters that comes with the kit is enough to replace what drains out. I used 7 quarts to refill mine. If you only put the 6 liters in, you may be a wee bit short. Especially if any was spilled during the fill up.

Is it possible to put in a good amount of fluid through the transmission cooler lines?

 

Not only is it possible, it's easy. Just look at those pictures. Loosen the nut on that S-shaped hard-line, tilt it upward, and pour in the fluid. Use a funnel with a small spout, and leave a little air gap, otherwise the fluid will back up in the hose. Remember, a little bit of fluid is going to drain out when you loosen the nut, so have a rag or something underneath it. Doing it that way is SO MUCH easier that trying to do it from underneath with the engine running.

Oh yeah... when you do it through the cooler hose, DO NOT run the engine. Otherwise you'll have transmission fluid squirting everywhere.

 

Ok, I just did the job. You were right, very easy indeed. I put in 3 quarters of a litter. Hopefully this fixes the gear skipping.

 

You just poured in 3 qrts, but you still don't know if the fluid level is correct too low or too high.
You better verify the level before it is too late and have to spend 1400 usd instead of 400 usd the dealer quoted for the fluid change.

Make sure the level is correct!

 

He put in .75 liters, not three quarts (I thought that at first, too.) If his fluid was so low that the pickup tube was sucking up air, then I doubt he has over-filled his transmission. I agree that the fluid should be checked the correct way, but a little driving will confirm whether or not his fluid level was the problem. If it's still hesitating during shifts then he has a completely different problem. If it's shifting properly now, he can lift the car, pull the plug, and measure the fluid level the correct way using the temp.

 

However... When I changed my fluid and pan a few months ago I used exactly 7 quarts of fluid. Assuming his car and my car had the same amount of fluid remaining in the transmission after the pan was removed, then his car would need 7 quarts put back in. There is 1.057 quarts in a liter, so six liters = 6.342 quarts. If he added another 3/4 liter, then he's pretty close to the ideal fluid level. He might be a little high, but I doubt he's so high that he's going to damage the transmission. HAVING SAID THAT, it would be best to pull the plug and check the fluid level.

 

sam, how is that car running since changing the fluid. were you having a gear box fault.

 

I was not having a gear box fault, but the transmission was jerky at times and it had close to 90,000 miles in it. Changing the fluid fixed the jerkiness. Unfortunately it didn't reduce the mileage.

 

Does anyone know where to get a kit, pan-filter, sleeve, and fluid for a 2002 xkr? Its got a leak.
