Default Tried the windo reboot-no luck Help!

I tried all the recommended ways to reprogram the passenger window on 2002 XK8 rag top. Up and down until you hear a click, up, let go of button reapply button for 5 sec then 10 sec, down, same procedure, and no luck. Open the door, and the window goes down about an inch, then goes back up to the top and stays there. If you lift the handle on exterior, the window goes down the inch, but let go of the handle and it goes right back up. They seem to work fine when putting the top down, they go down the inch for the top to activate. Any advice?

Do you have a multimeter to measure the voltage across your battery terminals with the engine off? If it is under about 12.3 to 12.4 volts you may have a bad battery. Window problems are often the first sign. This is worth checking before tearing the car apart looking for other problems.

PS: Next time please post in the 1996-2006 XK8/R section.

Default Thanks for the reply

Sorry I posted in the wrong place. Will do better next time. I forgot to add that I just installed a new battery. I was hoping that was the problem since I was having other electrical problems as well. Those problems went away, but still have the window problem.

I've moved your thread from XK/XKR 2006 onwards to XK8/XKR 1996-2006 forum.

You appear to be trying a complicated procedure for resetting the window travel limits.

Sitting in the vehicle with the doors shut and the top up. First reset the driver's window:

1. fully down and hold the button until your hear a soft click (approx 5 secs)
2. fully up and hold the button until you hear a soft click (approx 5 secs)
3. repeat for the passenger window

I will give this a try. Can you set the passenger window from the driver side control or do you have to set it with the passenger control? Thanks for your help !

Had this same issue recently. Started with drivers side and then affected both sides. I tried resetting etc. My battery tested good but it was four years old so I went ahead and replaced it. After resetting the windows again all is good.

If you know the battery voltage is good then it could be the micro switch in the door latch.

When the door is open, does the dash show "passenger door open"? If it doesn't then that is most likely your problem. Might be worth trying a little WD40 as mentioned in the threads below before taking it apart.

There are some threads about replacing it:

And a video on how to get the latch out:

Charlie,
you mention using WD40 to unstick the switch, do you just blind shoot it into the doorlatch or are you aiming it at a particular area? David

Into the various crevices of the latch mechanism to lubricate it and then open and close the door a few times to see if it will loosen up.

It might work, it might not, but it never hurts to lubricate the latches, hinges and other bits.
