See if you can get the codes, if you paid for the service you should have the rights to the codes. I agree with Matt but without the codes you have no direction.

funny thing today it would go in and out of loosy running mode, run good, run bad, run good, run bad, messages on readout would come and go. This thing is haunted.

What was your results on looking for vacuum leaks, part-load and full breather, and the EGR elbow status? (that egr tube was something I saw recently in the xj section, same motor though)

I am not sure what is going on without the codes and I must think if the TB was replaced it was not on a whim it was done with the supporting codes. Now that I said that I reread this post trying to understand the problem and try to provide a fix. I must tell you that without the codes I am taking a guess but based on the information I think it is worth looking into. Look at your brake switch.

I have not had a chance to get with the shop and get the codes they say they found. SInce I was returned, remounted, my orig TB, they gave me no paperwork.
None the less. I went thru the car today and every relay and fuse I reseated them. I ckecked all the connections in the truck. I made sure all the connections at the TB were firm, checked all the fuse/relays up in engine and reseated then, I assume on the pass side by firewall was the ECM I found, which had the trans control mod in it also. Well I gently pushed them all in to make sure maybe something got loose.
While I was doing all this I had the battery on a charger. It was not charged fully. It was like in the 6-8 range on the read out and still was charging to full but no green light yet saying it was full when I pulled it off the charger and drover the car for a GOOD 20 minutes, easy on it, beating it, would not act up. Put it in sport mode, no traction control mode, it ran just.
Once the car is running doesn't it run off the alt. thus have a weak battery not be a real issue???
Maybe I need a battery based on the fact how much of a charge it had to take.

It is colder out now, maybe the cold wweather is allowing the part that gices out to not give out.

sorry tim, I am not sure. Did you see the 'microfiche' parts files, 1 - 3 in the FAQ section. At the very beginning of those files, it lists the locations of all modules (i think)

Well today for my own pc of mind even though the shop said the batt was ok I had it tested and it was fine. It is a JAG batt, jag stickers on it but the folks that put it in did not mark out the date info so I do not know how old it is.
I have it outside running and it is idling fine. The last few issue moments it was acting up with in a manner of minutes.

Well. Car has been running, driving, getting run hard, idling, with sport drive on and off, tract control on and off. Car is running fine now after I went through and made sure any connections/fuses, relays, this, that were reseated if poosible. No errors at all at this point. Stayed close to home but had places to get it up to hwy speed to 2 mph.
I don't like this kind of stuff. HA HA HA HA
I am waiting for shop that worked on it if my orig TB that they say was put on my car is still rebuilt even though it failed bench test. Or if they put old parts back on it.

Well last time out car sat and idled for 10 min then drove around town and sat and idled again for an hour. Today I pull out the car and with in 3 min it went into ENGINE FAULT, TRACT CONTROL FAULT, engine revv'n up high then barely running, little stumbling, then a NEW ONE, got a batt not charging message for a sec but went away. Went and popped the fuse box in trunk, felt the square breakers, the brown ones, two of them were warm to the touch where the others were cold. I assume being a little warm is ok?

funny, looking at all the various TB's on ebay, the round canister on top of TB with the vac line going into it, all of them at black and plastic. Mine on my 97 is metal chrome.

The fact that you received a Traction Control Fault, Engine Fault and a Battery Charge fault leads me to believe that you have an electrical problem. If you look at the AJ27 oneline the power from the battery goes to the High Voltage Protection Module and I am assuming that that is what you said was warm and that concerns me. Two reasons for it getting warm, over / under charging or a bad connection. One feed goes from the battery to the HPPM then to the starter / charger the others go to the power distribution and one of them go under the hood to the engine management. If this were my problem I would pull the lead from the battery, pull the fuses in the trunk and replace them (AutoZone) and make sure all connections were clean and tight. I will tell you like I tell my servicemen you will not know if they are clean until you take it apart and look at it. The engine management feeds the TB, Throttle Motor, EGR Valve, VVT, Pedal Position Sensors along with many other things. Check and clean your connections and replace the fuses.
