Default Trunk/boot

I know why we Americans call the storage space usually at the rear of the car a trunk. Can any one give me the origin of the term "boot" used in the UK.

Boots/trunks, bonnets/hoods, wings/fenders all seem reasonably logically developed variations of our 'shared' language, but where on earth did your lug nuts come from when our wheel nuts seem so unambiguous?
