Default Unknown Alarm

97 XK8 Alarm

This alarm has happened when I first start the car and has also happened driving down the road. I don't get any lights or message display, just the audible. (5) dings; ding..ding..ding..ding..ding, and that sequence of (5) dings repeats (5) times.......

Any ideas?

Airbag problem I think. When you turn the car on, does the airbag light illuminate? I am not entirely sure, but I think the dings are there because the light doesn't come on. Either way, I think it is something to do with the airbag system

The alarm occurs only once in a while, maybe 1-2 times per week. The air bag light has been on since I got the car, I was told by the original owner they had the driver side air bag disabled do to the small size of the driver, <95 pound lady and she was afraid the air bag would cause more damage than her hitting the wheel. Do you think that was all just B-S and there is a problem with the driver side air bag? How can I re-able the air bag?

it's probably just a fuse pulled.. check your air bag fuse and see if it is there..

And disconnect the battery 15 minutes before you go dicking with the airbag system. Better safe than sorry mate.

This just happened today; The same alarm occurred when I started the car. I noticed the airbag light was NOT on and stayed off all the way home, about a 10 min drive. Once home the car sat off for about 1/2 hour. I started it back up, no alarm this time and the airbag light came on after the engine started. ??????

Also I just checked the driver's side fascia fuse box. Fuse #4, 10A (airbag) is missing. The yellow fuse protector was there but no fuse. Do I need to disconnect the battery to replace the fuse? If I don't will the air bags go off?????

Holy cow.

If I do disconnect the battery for this, what all has to be done when I re-connect it?

Thanks again for all the help !!!!!

I didn't wait for a reply and replaced the 10A fuse. Started up the car and after the normal "system check" all lights go out for about 2 seconds and then the airbag light came back on. Same as with the 10A fuse out???

Any ideas?

thanks......

Perhaps the airbag code(s) have to be cleared before you notice a difference?

edited because I said ABS first. Obviously...ABS is not air-bag-system...but it sounded good. lol

Yes, anytime you set off an OBD code it has to be reset to clear the code.

Following up
It has been over a month now and no audible alarms and the "airbag" symbol alarm is gone also. I never had a chance to get the alarm reset. Someone told me some alarms can reset themselves after sometimes up to 80 starts. Is this possible? Any way the symptoms are gone. Maybe it is best to do nothing........

On this car I have always disconnected the battery for ANY electrical change. Have even considered installing a battery cut off switch on the ground side.

The do nothing approach seems to be the best method in my experience!
