Hello everyone. I have an XK8 from 1997, Convertible with 80,000 km. Now I hear a clear valve game from cylinder bank 1, back. According to the workshop, the valve game must be rarely or never set. My question: can that lead to a problem?

 

Have you checked that your tensioners are the later, metal-bodied ones? I'd do that before starting the car any more, just in case, or you could be looking at massive damage.

But it depends on the noise - could be the vvt. Valve clarences do also need to be checked, but 80,000 km is not a huge mileage.

 

Thanks for the hint. Yes, I had the control chain and tensioner replaced in a specialist workshop about 10,000 km. The noise has only occurred now.

 

Does the noise disappear if you rev the engine up and then come back after a while?

 

I had a tick on mine which came and went ..put it down to piston slap ...cured when I found that the older models had had the oil level raised by 1 cm and I used 10 w 40

You need a mechanics stethoscope to track it down
