Default Voltage Sensing Problem

Friend (blackcat2000) has 2000 XKR (75K) He had a bad alternator, no ifs and or buts. The gauge showed clear dropping in readings from the normal 13- downward to below 11. Replaced alternator. Readings show 14 at battery and alternator and yet there is a message on the message center that indicates "battery not charging" and a battery light is lit on instrument pane. The gauge shows a straight 13 and the battery is being charged and the battery is brand new with in the last 3-4 months. No heck engine light. Any ideas. Apparently the voltage is consistent across the engine- so why the message and light. What is in between that could cause an error read.

He replaced the alternator, not the gauge, right?

Is there any problem other than what seems to be an inaccurate reading on the gauge (throwing codes, something like that) ?

Have the battery load tested at an auto parts chain store.

If the battery is OK, then have them check the OBDII codes for free, and also read what the OBDII code reader reports for voltage with and without the engine running.

Here are additional facts:

How long has it been since he changed the alternator? It might take several drive cycles for the fault to clear on its own, if it is not cleared manually with an OBDII scan tool.
