Smile Water pump

Any advice on the brand of water pump for my 2000 XK8. Going to change it alone with the thermostat housing and hoses when I change the primary cam chain rails.

Thank guys

There's lots of them, I think it's a fairly common design. There are plastic and metal impeller ones. The one that came off my 2005 had white plastic.
I read all about them and the plastic ones have the possibility of the plastic breaking and going in the cooling system and the metal ones have the risk of cavitating the coolant.
After going over all of that I went with the A.C. Delco Pro, metal impeller. I was surprised how small it was. Very easy install and so far so good. Looked very well made. Made in China. What isn't?
Tiny water pump. Came with metal gasket.

I have that part on both of my cars.

Amazon Amazon

It's about the same price on RockAuto or Amazon, and if you have prime, it's faster. However, if you're doing a decent sized order of parts (RockAuto lists the upgraded housing and other stuff), probably best to buy it there and save a few dollars.

Also I like your taste . I also have two dark metallic red Jaguars like yours, a sedan and convertible.

Rock Auto doesn't list the distribution pipe. Only place I see that listed is Parts Geek. That in mind I am thinking about going with them.

Thanks

Yeah it appears they don't sell that . I kind of wonder the failure rates of the distribution pipe, the R models have aluminum ones. It sounds pretty uncommon to have them fail, so a new plastic one should be plenty good (still worth replacing as it is 17yo).

Whenever I have a system apart, I "while I'm there" the crap out of it, just like you're doing now. I never once felt it was the wrong policy. The money for parts is missed for a very short time, but the time not on a flatbed seems worth it.

This pump has a metal impellor, and our coolant doesn't have any cavitation inhibitors, which will damage the impellor over time. Haven't got a clue on the life time though, as these are used in Lincoln ls engines that have a coolant that does have cavitation inhibitors. Imho best to stay with the plastic version.

Why doesn't the XK8 use the same coolant?

Why would you want a metal impellor and create the need for cavitation inhibitors?

Silica is a known cavitation inhibitor, but that can also clog up the system. The green coolant used in the early days of the XK8 had a big amount of silica, and iirc that caused the heater to clog up.

There are probably other inhibitors in coolants around nowadays, but I don't think they will be compatible with our OAT, so you would have to completely flush the system if you change it.

As said I don't know how long the impellors would last, so if you stick to the oat, you may want to check your pump at a later stage.

Thank you all for the info. I do intend to stay with the red coolant. And I suppose the ACDelco has a metal impeller. So, if someone has a favorite white plastic impeller one I would like to know about it. Other than that I'm totally confused.

just go with the orig WP. Think how many of these cars went 80k plus miles with the orig before it started LEAKING. I can't recall a thread here where the plastic one tore up and ruined anyone's Jag. No one will have their jag long enough to replace it again most likely.

Thanks for the thread I am ready to order a WP as well because I need to change my Tstat housing. There are a lot of choices and prices range from around $40-$110. Still not sure which way to go but, need to make decision soon.

Regarding coolant, I was planing on changing the top hoses as well and figured I would replace coolant I take out for the job. Are there any problems with adding new coolant and mix with existing? Any recommendations on coolant? Again, there seems to be a lot of options.

Thanks!

Andrew

Make certain your fresh coolant meets the required specs. Mixing coolant specs is a recipe for system gelling and eventually a blown engine....

EZdriver. Having the same issues as you trying to decide on a brand with the plastic impeller. Problem is I haven't found any sites that tell you what impeller they are using. Some will say metal impeller so am I supposed to assume that the others are plastic? I am considering the Airtex, but,not sure???

Here's a thread from the X308 Forum on water pumps that has a link to a Jag TB about the plastic impellors. Apparently the last ones were white and lasted longer.
